Before you start looking
Considering your situation
Before you set your heart on a new pet, it’s important to look at your situation to make sure you can care for a cat. Although it’s tempting to rush out and get a kitten, realising later that it doesn’t work isn’t fun for you or your pet. Take a look at our handy guide to kitten development to understand what to expect in your kitten’s first year. You can talk to anyone else at home. Check your tenancy for pet conditions if applicable. And think about whether you have the time and money for a cat.
Asking for opinions
Chatting to someone you trust who’s experienced in taking care of a cat can be a great way to learn more about what’s involved. Cat-owning friends or family members may also be able to advise on whether your home is feline-friendly. They can also suggest how a cat might fit into your life.
Finding your fit
To figure out what’ll work best for you, it’s good to read about different breeds and ages of cat. Sure, kittens are cute. But a calm older cat might be a better fit for you and could be a great way to help a cat find a loving forever home. It’s good to have some idea what you’re after if you decide to start shopping seriously.
Testing it out
If possible, it’s best to try and visit friends’ cats. You could cat-sit for a friend to experience cat care without committing. Equally, if you’re worried about allergies, it’s important to spend some time around the type of cat or kitten you’re considering to make sure it’s not going to be a problem.
While you’re looking
Asking for more info
If you see a cat you think could be your new furry friend, you can get in touch with the seller or shelter to find out more. They’ll be able to tell you about the cat or kitten – what are they like? Are they a cuddly type, or do they prefer their own space? Are they an outside or indoor cat? You could also ask for more pictures.
Researching the shelter or owner
You may want to take a look at the current owner or shelter and check whether or not they’re reputable. If their pets are reasonably priced, happy and healthy, they’re probably a good option. Our pet advice hub has more information on making sure the selling owner is legitimate.
Meeting your new pet
Getting to know a pet is an important part of making sure you’ll go well together. You can spend some time with your potential new family member so that the two of you can check each other out. If you can’t meet up with the cat or kitten you’re looking at, you could ask the owner or shelter to set up a video call.
Before you make the final decision
Not rushing
Getting a pet is a big decision. Any cat you choose will hopefully be part of your family for years to come. It’s important to take your time and give it some thought. Don’t let anyone push you into getting a pet you’re unsure about.
Double-checking the paperwork
It’s worth taking time to read all of the sale paperwork carefully and make sure everything on it makes sense. The breeder or shelter should hand over the certificates for any vaccinations the cat or kitten has had, as well as the details for any microchips. (Don’t know what microchipping is? Read our guide on the legal requirements of cat ownership). If you’re interested in a pedigree pet, it’s important to read through all of the registration paperwork and any agreements relating to that.
Getting a second opinion
Rehoming a cat or kitten online need careful thought. It’s a good idea to run your plan by someone you trust who’s been through the pet adoption process before. If you’ve talked it through and you feel you’re ready for a cat or kitten, great! Time to start your adventure with your new pet.
