The Gumtree Toybox

Christmas will be a costly time for many this year, and our recent research reveals 8 in 10 of parents will feel pressure to buy children their wish list.

We know our platform can help people source items affordably, and sometimes for free. This is why we’re launching the Gumtree Toybox campaign, helping families around the UK find affordable and free toys. As the cost of living crisis continues to hit, many will have to make sacrifices this Christmas. To understand more about the situation, we commissioned new research to find the root cause of parents’ financial pressures.

Feeling guilty for not buying new gifts (44%) was the top reason parents were reluctant top shop second-hand. Following this is believing their children will want something new (29%). Parents also admit knowing where to go to get a good deal (19%) put them off preloved presents.

When asked about things such as the annual DreamToys list, 4 in 10 felt they only serve to increase pressure on parents.

Pre-loved presents triumph

Parents needn’t worry about their ‘grown up’ concerns though. Our research found over half (52%) of children said they’d wouldn’t know if a gift was second-hand. A whopping 55% kids say they wouldn’t mind a preloved present. Additionally, nearly a fifth (18%) think a second-hand gift would be ‘cool’. Almost a third (30%) felt proud their presents were better for the planet. And this is good news as 16% admit they don’t always play with all their new toys after Christmas.

In response, we’ve launched the Gumtree Toybox. Our aim is to showcase the brilliant pre-loved kids’ toys that can be found on the platform.

Toy drive for donations

So with the help of Laura Jackson we are bringing to life The Gumtree Toybox.

We are setting ourselves the ambitious goal of increasing Toy listings by 10K! That’s right. We’re asking parents to clear out old toys and, where possible, list them for free on Gumtree. Think about the well-loved, classic toys that are packed full of memories, that can be passed onto new children to enjoy for years to come.

To take part simply sort through unwanted toys and list items in our freebies or Toy category using #GumtreeToybox in the description. You can also share your listing across social to encourage users to list. Find us on Twitter, FacebookInstagram and TikTok.

We’re also putting the traditional ‘Dream Toy List’ to the test. The Gumtree Toybox will feature alternative toys to these ‘best of’ lists as well as classics that will be loved for many Christmases to come.

Join us and help us hit our target to help families across the UK this Christmas. In fact, why not also check out our Gumfree campaign which brought to life our freebies category.
