Cherry’s Guide to ‘Good Fashion Finds’

Meet Cherry: You may recognise her from our recent ‘Gumtree Presents, Good Finds’ episode – don’t worry if not you can watch (and re-watch) her episode right here.

Every ‘Good Find’ outfit helps her take on a different persona for every performance she does. Cherry credits make up and fashion with giving her the greatest freedom of expression. She’s found many a staple drag ensemble on Gumtree, including her favourite pink dress. So, who better to share with us her own tips on finding the perfect fashion items on Gumtree, than Cherry herself.

1. Know what you’re looking for & manifest it

This is a tip to be more time efficient with your Gumtree searching, to get exactly what you’re looking for in order to create the perfect look. For example, when I look for clothes for drag I envision a look and a theme, then buy clothes based on that. It’s easier to make an outfit, it saves time, it’s cheaper and more eco-friendly – what’s not to love.

My top tip – some search words I use: Rave, Cabaret, wide shoes, regular skirts, Shiny, Performance and dancer.

2. Think about things you can upcycle

Upcycling is a great way to add new life to worn/pre-loved clothes and tailor them to you. I love to upcycle as a hobby because it’s fun and I enjoy creative projects. For upcycling you can change the garment to fit your measurements or make a completely new style e.g cropping a jumper and using the item as material for something completely new. The possibilities are endless.

3. Stick to a budget

This is important because it allows you to find really cool pieces and items of clothing without breaking the bank, especially handy if you’re a student. One major appeal of buying from Gumtree and buying second hand is that they’re usually much lower in price than buying new. Clothes are more affordable and accessible to all, which just happens to be it’s more sustainable too!

4. Use the filters

Who doesn’t love a filter, right! The ones on Gumtree are really helpful in saving you time: you can find your size, set your colour preferences, all which help you narrow down options and tailor the search more to your needs. This in turn means that you can find what you’re looking for, quickly.

5. Use the save feature

The save feature is good for saving random pieces that you want to come back to later. I use the save feature when I see something I like but I don’t have a fully realised concept or outfit yet. I then go through my saved items often so I can see if an ensemble will come together. It is also good if you don’t have the money for an item yet and want to come back to it.

So, currently in my saved list I have:

Bodysuit White mesh bodysuit Wedding dress

6. Consider the location

A really helpful feature on Gumtree is that you can see where the item is on the map. Your good find could literally be around the corner – perfect if you need it asap, or if you need to plan travel to collect it. Some sellers may send you the item in the post, which is also great if you find that ‘Must Have’ but it’s miles away.

7. Check seller reviews

And my final tip, which is very important when I look for any item: check the seller reviews. If they have a low score, then maybe be a bit cautious with buying an item but on the flip side, if they are highly reviewed then it’s a good sign for your Good Find.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my tips and that you find them helpful 💗 Cherry
