Porsche Macan Review

Gumtree Rating

4.0 rating

For driving enthusiasts who are looking to splash out on a luxury car, the Porsche Macan offers a hint of everyday practicality to go with its impeccable performance and design. It’s a seven-seater SUV, and probably the comfiest and most enjoyable people carrier available on the market. It’s not quite as powerful as one of Porsche’s beloved sportscars, but its handling is every bit as impressive, while the iconic German manufacturer’s branding and style always makes its presence felt on the road.

+

Looks incredible

Cons

Interior isn’t as elegant as the rest of the car

Not quite roomy or practical enough for a big family

Very expensive

The entry-level trim of the Porsche Macan has a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, which can deliver around 27 miles to the gallon. This seven-seater speedster comes in three trims, the Macan, Macan S and Macan GTS, and we’ll be focusing on models from 2019 and 2020.

Driving performance of the Porsche Macan

Our Driving Rating9 / 10

The Porsche Macan offers the incredible driving performance that you’d expect from one of the world’s most iconic luxury brands. While this level of handling is standard for a Porsche, it’s far from the norm for SUVs, and it really makes this a one-of-a-kind vehicle. Steering is very responsive and accurate, with a real feeling of agility and tactility, and the four-wheel drive grips the road wonderfully, even in wet conditions. The perfectly balanced suspension means that you’ll rarely feel a bump as you float around city streets with ease.

Safety and reliability of the Porsche Macan

Our Safety Rating8 / 10

The Macan is one of the few Porsches to have been put through extensive crash tests by Euro NCAP. The model passed with flying colours back in 2014, though it hasn’t been tested since. It achieved the full five-star rating, scoring 88% for adult passenger safety, 87% for child safety, 60% for pedestrian safety and 66% for its tech. Porsches also tend to score highly for driver satisfaction, and this model has a reputation for being very reliable.

Under the bonnet of the Porsche Macan

Our Engine Rating8 / 10

The entry-level Macan’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine isn’t anywhere near as intimidating as you’d find on most Porsche models, but it still packs a punch, with around 242 bhp provided to the wheels. If you were feeling the need to get out of the blocks quickly, this can get you from standing to 60 mph in as little as 6.5 seconds. There’s also a 3.0-litre V6 version available on the Macan S, which provides 349 bhp, or the Macan Turbo will take you up to 434 bhp. Diesel engines were also available on models released before 2020.

What you'll find in the Porsche Macan

Our Design Rating9 / 10

The Macan is a truly impressive thing to behold. It’s a striking design that combines all the sculpted curves and athletic dynamism of a Porsche sports car with the more boxy body shape of an SUV. The clamshell bonnet is a particularly eye-catching feature, with a wide, muscular front grille below it, and the wraparound tail lights on later models that give it an extra touch of class. All dimensions are perfectly proportioned, and the overall aesthetic exudes sophistication and luxury.

Comfort and interiors in the Porsche Macan

Our Comfort Rating6 / 10

Although it’s definitely a premium cabin, the interior of the Porsche Macan lets the side down a little, particularly considering how impressive it is to look at from the outside. Materials are high-quality and well designed, but getting full-leather outfitting will mean investing a little more. Space is also an issue, particularly if you want to use the Macan as a family vehicle or people carrier. Passengers in the back are likely to be quite cramped on longer trips, and the available boot space is also limited for an SUV.

What features you'll find in the Porsche Macan

Our Features Rating7 / 10

Inside the cabin is a 10.9-inch touchscreen display to control the advanced infotainment system, which can integrate with Apple or Android devices. Air conditioning and fully-adjustable electric seats come as standard with the Macan, as do 18-inch alloy wheels. These can be upgraded to 19-inches or even as far as 21 inches if you’re willing to pay extra. Full leather upholstery is also available as an upgrade, which might be worth doing to bring the interior quality in line with the elegant design of the exterior.

What fuel efficiency to expect from the Porsche Macan

Our Fuel Consumption Rating7 / 10

If fuel efficiency is what you’re looking for in a Porsche Macan, it’s definitely worth tracking down one of the older, discontinued Macan S diesel models, which can offer up to 46.3 miles to the gallon. For the newer range, the 2.0-litre petrol engine on the basic version will give you around 27.7 miles to the gallon, which drops to around 24 mpg for the Macan S or Macan Turbo models. The CO2 emissions tend to be between 240 and 250 g/km.

Running costs of the Porsche Macan

Our Cost Rating7 / 10

You won’t save a lot of money on fuel costs with the Macan, but it’s not notably worse in terms of efficiency than other vehicles in its class. As it’s a luxury car, you’ll have to pay a road tax surcharge for the first five years of ownership, and the high value and performance means that its insurance premiums will also be a significant chunk of change. However, if you’re willing to shell out for a Porsche SUV, you’re unlikely to be concerned about all these extras on top.

Our verdict of the Porsche Macan
