Nissan Juke Review

Gumtree Rating

4.0 rating

The Nissan Juke returns with its signature style – but while its distinctive look might remain, the interior has enjoyed a complete makeover. New tech and a more thoughtful use of space are available from the 2019 model onwards. Lighter, longer and with a wider wheelbase, the Juke is still nimble enough for urban streets while providing more generous space within. The Juke turned heads when it burst onto the scene, and the family-friendly SUV promises to be an eye-catching sidekick to all your fun, family adventures once again.

What we think about the Nissan Juke

Polarising looks may be an issue for some cars, but the Nissan Juke’s style and presence give it a deserving charm.

Pros

+

Advanced safety tech

+

Interesting design

+

Spacious interior with deep boot space

Cons

No AWD (all-wheel drive) option

Sticky dual-clutch

The Juke comes in four trims – ST, ST+, ST L and Ti. The moderate-firm suspension is never really tested by the game little 117 bhp engine. Any discomfort felt by the suspension is balanced by the thicker tyres and improved handling. The driving setup is cleverly arranged, with good visibility and comfortable control over steering wheel and pedals below.

Driving performance of the Nissan Juke

Our Driving Rating7 / 10

Nissan’s 2019 Juke handles better than its previous version thanks to its newly raised platform – it seems right at home in its urban habitat. Parking and three-point turns are smooth thanks to its tight turning circle. All trims have the same engine, a three-cylinder 1.5-litre and dual-clutch automatic transmission. The dual-clutch can take a little getting used to, but once you adapt to its new transmission you’ll be able to enjoy the Juke’s exciting performance.

Safety and reliability of the Nissan Juke

Our Safety Rating8 / 10

Euro NCAP awarded the Nissan Juke a five-star rating when it was first released in 2011, scoring a respectable 87% and 81% for adult and child protection respectively. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking when a pedestrian or cyclist is detected. Lane-Departure warning, rear-cross traffic alert and blind-spot warning all come as standard – providing comfort and safety in challenging conditions. Its blind-spot warning system is particularly useful given the minor obstruction caused by the chunky pillars, stretching along the edge of the windscreen – evidence of the attention to detail put into the Juke’s design.

Under the bonnet of the Nissan Juke

Our Engine Rating7 / 10

All Juke trims come with a standard three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine which manages to produce 117 bhp. 0-60 mph is 10.4 seconds for the manual transmission and 11.1 seconds for its automatic. The suspension is smooth enough and its bigger 19-inch tyres hug the road, but not too well to adversely impact the feel of the drive. It’s not an engine that will set the world of a car enthusiast alight, but in its natural urban habitat, it won’t let you down.

What you'll find in the Nissan Juke

Our Design Rating8 / 10

The Juke’s unusual yet sleek design is as polarising now as it was then, but therein lies its charm – for those looking for a unique car that stands out in a crowd, Nissan may have your answer. That being said, the new Juke is a little more grown-up. It has more class than quirk in its styling thanks to a new Y-shape design blurring the large LED headlights down into the front grille. Taller, wider and longer, the Juke’s spacious redesign has been managed without sacrificing agility or driving performance.

Comfort and interiors in the Nissan Juke

Our Comfort Rating8 / 10

There’s a cared-for feel to the Juke’s interior. The Nissan team who designed it did it with heart – and we’re not only talking about the vast leg space and headspace in the front and rear seats. Small details such as soft padded materials throughout the cabin’s interior and metallic-finished knobs on the dash add to the charm. If you’re looking to retain some the original’s eccentricity, the interior trim is available in a range of vivid colours. The seats are both supportive and comfortable, while the boot is a generous 422 litres.

What features you'll find in the Nissan Juke

Our Features Rating8 / 10

The care taken with the design continues into the selection of available features, many of which come as standard. The stereo system is powered by Bose, giving your journey an otherworldly surround-sound feeling. The eight-inch central touchscreen also comes as standard, as do Apple CarPlay, AndroidAuto and Bluetooth connectivity. The rear-view camera and rear parking sensors ensure city parking is smooth. The features may not be uniquely high-tech, but there is a sense of value in their inclusion as standard.

What fuel efficiency to expect from the Nissan Juke

Our Fuel Consumption Rating8 / 10

Do you get an impressive fuel economy from the Nissan Juke? It certainly delivers an above-average fuel economy for a car of its size. On average, it’ll give you 41 mpg and its CO2 emissions average out at approximately 159 g/km. Longer motorway journeys can lead to more fuel usage and a reduction in the Juke’s appealing fuel economy. This may be a factor worth considering, particularly if long-journeys are part of your day-to-day.

Running costs of the Nissan Juke

Our Cost Rating8 / 10

Given the fun features and charm Nissan manages to squeeze into the Juke, it is a very affordable option when upgrading to a bigger family car. Services are recommended annually, or approximately every 17,000 miles. The Juke has a reputation for endurance – in general, they tend not to breakdown. But should you encounter any difficulty on the road, Nissan provides a three-year warranty as standard, or coverage for up to 60,000 miles. Either way, you’ll be in safe hands.
