Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Review

Gumtree Rating

4.0 rating

Range Rover’s distinctive branding and prestige aesthetic is often more than enough reason to shell out for their cars, and the stylish Evoque is no exception. Its impeccable design also applies inside the cabin, where you can fit up to five passengers. Performance is solid, safety is excellent, and there’s the option to take the car off-road if you’re feeling adventurous. However, if you’re in the market for a convenient family car rather than a high-end fashion accessory, there are definitely SUVs available with a little more practicality.

Take a look at the Evoque model page to explore available specs.

Upgrade to the S trim for 18-inch wheels and leather seats. Or splash out on the SE, which offers 20-inch alloys and a powered tailgate among other fancy tech features.

Driving performance of the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Driving Rating8 / 10

A fun car to take out for longer trips, the Evoque has refined handling. The high seating position gives you a great view of the road and also offers a lot of comfort. Steering is accurate, but a little slacker than more sports-oriented vehicles. And if you do choose to take the Evoque off-road and test out its all-wheel drive capabilities, it does an impressive job. The combination of excellent suspension and the Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system, which automatically adjusts to different terrain, delivers a smooth ride.

Safety and reliability of the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Safety Rating9 / 10

Euro NCAP last carried out crash tests on the Evoque in 2019, and the car received the full five-star rating. It scored an impressive 94% for protection of adult passengers, and 87% for the protection of children on board. You can also expect high-level safety gear to come as standard. These features include six airbags, a rear camera, front and rear parking assistance, an intrusion sensor and a deployable bonnet with a pedestrian airbag.

Under the bonnet of the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Engine Rating8 / 10

The most basic version of the Evoque has a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, which provides around 197 bhp, and will get you to 60 mph from standing in 8.6 seconds. If you’re likely to use the car for lots of long-distance driving, it’s worth checking out one of the two 2.0-litre diesel units, which provide 161 bhp or 201 bhp. The top-spec petrol engine can do 0-60 in as little as 6.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 150 mph, providing just under 300 bhp. There are also hybrid engines available on the newer models.

What you'll find in the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Design Rating8 / 10

The Evoque’s expert craftsmanship and sophistication is obvious to anyone who can appreciate automobile design. Both muscular and streamlined, it’s sure to turn heads on the road, demanding attention with its refined aesthetic. The bold nose of the car stands out with distinctive large vents and slim, futuristic-looking headlights. The tapered side windows are another nice touch. Wheel arches are as large as you’d expect from a Range Rover, but the Evoque is relatively short, even for a smaller SUV.

Comfort and interiors in the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Comfort Rating7 / 10

In the cabin of the Evoque, you’ll notice Range Rover’s extra touch of elegance, which is also reflected in its exterior design. The layout is clean and simple, but all parts are engineered with precision, and the choice of materials is ideal for comfort and sophistication. However, passengers in the rear seats may find that there’s not quite as much space as they’d expect from such an imposing-looking vehicle. Cargo space is also around average for this type of car, with around 590 litres available.

What features you'll find in the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Features Rating8 / 10

If the base design of the Evoque isn’t enough for you, you can pay more for metallic paint. Alloy wheels up to 21 inches are also available. You’ll get a 10-inch touchscreen as standard, through which you can control the car’s Pivi Pro infotainment system. You can upgrade to get a second, 10-inch info screen on the dashboard, which replaces all the analogue dials, and is particularly useful for the satnav. Audiophiles might also want to throw in a little extra for an excellent Meridian stereo sound system.

What fuel efficiency to expect from the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Fuel Consumption Rating7 / 10

The best fuel economy you can expect from the Evoque comes courtesy of the newer hybrid engines. The petrol-hybrid can run for 40 miles on just battery power, and has a quoted efficiency figure of 198 mpg. If you opt for one of the two diesels, you’ll get just under 44 miles to the gallon. The petrol engines are notably inefficient, however, with even the basic version providing you with a mere 24 miles to the gallon. They’re also not great for the environment, emitting over 200 g/km of CO2.

Running costs of the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

Our Cost Rating7 / 10

The Evoque will be a costly car to run if you choose the inefficient petrol engines, so if possible, it’s definitely worth shelling out a little extra for the diesels and hybrids. The hybrid will also qualify you for a discount on your road tax. But if you choose too many extras that up the price, this could be cancelled out by the luxury car surcharge. It’s also an expensive model to insure when compared to some of its competitors, and the manufacturer warranty of three years is quite basic.

Our verdict of the Land Rover Range RoverEvoque

4.0 rating

4 / 5 Gumtree rating

The Evoque boasts the undeniable prestige and style of a Range Rover and is fun to drive, but you can definitely get more useful SUVs for this kind of money.
