Offering some of the best value in the SUV market, the Dacia Duster has a 15-year track record of satisfying cost-conscious families. For the pretty much unbeatable price you’ll get stylish, unique design and a spacious and practical interior, as well as impressive off-roading capabilities. It’s easy on your wallet after you’ve bought it too, offering excellent fuel economy. The Duster is available with a range of engines, including a 1.3-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel.

So how serious are you about this whole SUV thing? Do you just want the look for the school run, or are you genuinely intending to use the vehicle off-road? If it’s the latter, take a look at the Jeep Wrangler. The boot space is class-leading, and it’s not cramped in the cabin either, while a range of clever personalisation options means there’s bound to be a used model out there to suit you. It handles very nicely too, balancing fun with comfort to deliver what most people are looking for in a family car.

SEAT was fairly late to the SUV party, arriving with the Ateca in 2016. This mid-sized crossover is a decent option for cost-conscious families, offering an easy drive, bags of space and impeccable safety credentials. It’s available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, so shopping around should turn up one that’s suited to your needs. Decent fuel efficiency means this remains a good-value choice once you’re on the road too.
