Audi TT Review

Gumtree Rating

4.0 rating

One of the most recognisable sports cars on the road, the Audi TT has a sleek and elegant look that’s matched by its modern, minimal interior. It’s not just a pretty face, either. It offers a powerful engine and great handling, although it’s not quite as fun to drive as some of its more high-performance rivals. If you want the feel of a sports racer, but you don’t want to break the bank or sacrifice everyday practicality, look no further.

What we think about the Audi TT

Looking like a star and handling like a dream, the Audi TT is an ideal solution for those drivers who can’t splash out on a top-of-the-line sports car, but want to introduce more style and power into their everyday driving.

Cons

High-performance rivals offer more thrills

Safety and reliability leave room for improvement

The entry-level 2020 Audi TT has a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine offering a reasonable 29 miles per gallon. For higher performance, look to the TTS – it has a tuned up 2.0-litre engine and four-wheel drive – or the 2.4-litre, five cylinder RS engine variant. The TT received a four-star NCAP safety rating in 2015.

Driving performance of the Audi Tt

Our Driving Rating8 / 10

Handling in the Audi TT is extremely agile, with sharp, responsive steering and incredible grip. The well-balanced suspension helps you glide on most surfaces. While older models tend to lean towards a smoother, more laidback performance, recent versions also amp up their fun side, providing more power and a satisfying engine roar. That said, the driving experience is sometimes a little lacking in terms of grit and rawness. Though you’ll always have the utmost confidence in the capability of the TT, it can feel like the car is doing most of the work for you.

Safety and reliability of the Audi Tt

Our Safety Rating5 / 10

The Audi TT has basic safety technology, offering blind-spot monitoring, electronic stability control, and a full set of airbags. However, TT models do lack some important capabilities that are commonly found in other sporty vehicles at a similar price point. Advanced features like forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking are missing from all versions of the TT. This led to the car receiving only a four-star rating from Euro NCAP when it was tested back in 2015. The TT isn’t known for being the most reliable vehicle either, though it has fewer issues than some major competitors.

Under the bonnet of the Audi Tt

Our Engine Rating9 / 10

The latest versions of the Audi TT are only available with petrol engines, as diesel variants were discontinued in 2019. It’s also worth noting that the new 2.0-litre engine replaced an older 1.8-litre version. This new engine generates 228 bhp and does 0-60 in just 6.6 seconds, and the standard six-speed automatic transmission allows you to really feel its power. Plus, there’s a manual option if automatic transmission isn’t for you. To really get the most bang for your TT buck, the TTS engine provides 292 bhp, and it soars from 0-60 in an impressive 4.2 seconds.

What you'll find in the Audi Tt

Our Design Rating9 / 10

Regardless of how you feel about its performance, it’s tough to deny that the Audi TT is a beautiful vehicle. Its basic design hasn’t really changed much since its inception, and most updates just bring very small tweaks to its iconic silhouette. The sleek lines and bold curves give it a powerful aesthetic that’s perhaps the key selling point for most buyers. With a length of just 165 inches, the car is noticeably more compact than many of its sporty competitors.

Comfort and interiors in the Audi Tt

Our Comfort Rating7 / 10

The car’s interior is as stylish and impeccably crafted as its exterior, although not as distinctive. All the materials are of the highest quality and build standard is excellent. The seats are easily adjustable and as comfortable to sit in as they are well crafted. Though the back seats aren’t particularly comfortable for taller passengers, the TT compensates with an impressive amount of boot space. Fold the seats down and you can get up to 700 litres, which is almost double that offered by some sports cars.

What features you'll find in the Audi Tt

Our Features Rating7 / 10

All 2020 Audi TT models come with a DAB digital radio, leather seats, and climate control as standard, as well as the Virtual Cockpit system which you can operate from a large 12-inch colour touchscreen. Both Apple and Android smartphone users are catered for with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. LED upgrades to the headlights are available, and you can get a high-end Bang & Olufsen sound system in the most expensive version of the TT. You can also choose between 18, 19, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

What fuel efficiency to expect from the Audi Tt

Our Fuel Consumption Rating7 / 10

Though the diesel variant of the Audi TT’s engine was recently discontinued, the petrol engines still deliver relatively decent fuel efficiency, particularly for a sports car. The entry-level 2.0-litre engine will provide 23 miles to the gallon for city driving, or up to 31 mpg for motorway drives. The more powerful TTS engine is slightly less suited to long-distance driving, delivering around 29 miles for a gallon of petrol. Its carbon emissions are about what you’d expect, with the basic engine emitting around 156 g/km.

Running costs of the Audi Tt

Our Cost Rating7 / 10

Good fuel efficiency means that the TT should be one of the cheaper sports vehicles to run, and the car is also slightly more reliable than many of its competitors, further keeping your running costs down. Reports suggest that about a fifth of TT owners have experienced a fault within their first year of ownership. Audi provides a three-year warranty as standard, which is similar to the protection offered for similar cars. With a sought-after brand name and badge appeal, the TT is likely to retain a lot of its value if you sell it on.
