Today’s upcycle idea comes from Judy Rom, the co-founder of Upcycle That (upcyclethat.com). Upcycle That was started on Earth Day 2012 and features the best upcycling ideas from around the world. Upcycle That is on a mission to inspire as many people as possible to upcycle. Fits in nicely with our #UpcycleRevolution.

These teacups upcycled into candles are an awesome DIY project. They are really cute and super easy to make. Teacup candles will add a lovely ambience to your home and would also make fantastic gifts for hostesses, bridal showers, birthdays... the list goes on.

It’s not hard to find teacups to upcycle! You might even have some that are currently collecting dust in your cupboard. Otherwise look on Gumtree.

Ready to get started? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Old/vintage teacups
  • Soy wax flakes
  • Essential oils
  • Wicks
  • Wick supports (think: chopsticks, spoons, pencils etc.)
  • Double boiler or 2 pots
  • Stove top

Step 1: The first step is melting the soy wax flakes. A double boiler works perfectly for this. If you don’t have a double boiler just use 2 pots instead. Add water to the bottom pot and put your wax flakes in the top pot. Turn your hot plate to medium high heat and give your wax a few minutes to melt. You’ll know it’s ready once it’s completely liquid.

Step 2: Put your wick into the centre of the teacup and prop it up with wick supports. You can use chopsticks, pencils or even spoons as wick supports. Pour the melted wax into the teacups and add several drops of essential oils. Judy experimented with different combinations of essential oils including lemon, sweet orange, lavender, mint, rosewood and ylang ylang.

Step 3: Let your wax cool completely until it’s hard to the touch. Then trim your wick.

There you have it, gorgeous and eco-friendly upcycled teacup candles.
