Rehoming a fish

Time to say goodbye to your pet fish? Look for clues that the person who wants to buy it has what it takes…

Read our tips below...

Are they ready?

Make sure the buyer understands what your fish needs and how much it will cost to keep it happy and healthy. When they're coming to pick up your fish, they should have proper facilities to transport it home. The water temperatures have to be the same when transferring a fish to its new environment.

Make sure your fish is healthy

The fish you sell should be healthy and free from any sign of injury or disease. Be honest about how healthy your fish is and has been in the past.

Specialist care

Make sure the buyer knows that fish need veterinary care that could involve referral to a specialist and that this could cost a lot of money.

Quick delivery

Never send a fish in the post. It might sound ridiculous, but it does occasionally happen and it is very harmful to the fish's welfare.

You can say no

Before agreeing to sell your fish, make sure they are the right person to look after it – even if this means saying no to the first person who views it. Always ensure the welfare of your fish is top priority.

Our Partners

At Gumtree we take animal welfare very seriously.

We work with a number of animal welfare charities, including the RSPCA, and we are an active member of the Pets Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG). PAAG is made up of animal welfare groups, vets and online classified sites, all working together to promote responsible pet advertising. Our shared goal is that all animals advertised for sale online are advertised legally and ethically.

For more information on PAAG or advice on buying a pet online, you can visit their site:
