As a bird owner, you know that birds are essentially wild animals. You understand they need to be handled and socialised with every day to stay tame. Make sure the potential owner knows this, too. And check their lifestyle will suit bird ownership.

Do they understand the commitment?

Owning a bird can be a lifetime commitment. Some species, especially parrots, might even outlive their new owner. Make sure they know the life expectancy of your pet, and are prepared to care for them that long.

Are they a collector?

If the buyer is adding a bird to their collection, make sure they know to keep birds apart for the first month.

You can say no

Don’t feel you have so say yes to the first person that views your bird. Your focus is on the welfare of your bird, so it is worth spending time making the right decision.

Our Partners

At Gumtree we take animal welfare very seriously.

We work with a number of animal welfare charities, including the RSPCA, and we are an active member of the Pets Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG). PAAG is made up of animal welfare groups, vets and online classified sites, all working together to promote responsible pet advertising. Our shared goal is that all animals advertised for sale online are advertised legally and ethically.

For more information on PAAG or advice on buying a pet online, you can visit their site:

A fresh start in life
