What to look out for

A handy checklist

If you've found a puppy you think you'd like to bring home, take this list of questions with you when you visit.

  • Is the puppy older than eight weeks old?
  • Did the owner breed the puppies themselves?
  • Have you met the puppy with its mother?
  • Have you met the puppy in its home?
  • Will the breeder let you meet the puppy twice before taking it home?
  • Have you checked the breeder's details?
  • Is the puppy, litter and mother in good health?
  • Has the puppy been vaccinated?
  • Has the puppy been microchipped?
  • Have they been treated for worms or other parasites?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no', then consider looking for a puppy from a different breeder. If you are concerned about animal welfare, then you can report the advert to Gumtree or you can contact the RSPCA directly.
