What to look out for

A handy checklist

If you've found a kitten you think you'd like to bring home, take this checklist of useful questions with you when you visit.

  • Is the kitten older than eight weeks?
  • Did the owner breed the kittens themselves?
  • Have you met the kitten with its mother?
  • Have you met the kitten in its home?
  • Is the kitten in good health?
  • Is he or she friendly and alert with bright eyes?
  • Has the kitten been treated for worms or other parasites?
  • Has the kitten been vaccinated?
  • Is the kitten you saw in the ad definitely the kitten you're stroking?
  • Are they comfortable when you pick them up?
  • If you already have a cat, is the kitten ok around other cats?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no', then consider looking for a kitten from a different breeder. If you are concerned about animal welfare then you can report the advert to Gumtree or you can contact the RSPCA directly.
