Buying a bird

A feathered friend can keep you company day and night for your lifetime. Or longer. So you'll need to plan for now and the future.

Read our tips below...

Know what to expect

Domestic birds can be similar to their wild cousins - noisy, messy and destructive as they're full of energy and love lots of room to move around and play. Make sure you have the right environment for them. They eat different foods, including pellets, grains, beans, fruits and veg. And they can be sensitive to air quality, light exposure and sleep.

Say hello

Before you buy a bird, go to visit it. Ask the owner lots of questions about looking after it, and take a look at the bird's medical history.

Check their mood and health

When you're visiting, first of all stand back so he or she relaxes. Once they're relaxed, check they're sleek, lively and healthy. Fluffy and bored might mean they're not too well.

Find a specialist vet

Before you buy your new pet, find a local vet who specialises in bird health. They'll be able to advise on dangerous, wild or exotic species that need a licence.

Quick delivery

Never let a seller send you a bird in the post. It is unethical and highly stressful to the bird, but amazingly it does happen! Plus, you should always see the bird that you are buying in person to ensure it is healthy and well cared for.

To the rescue

If you are looking for a bird, why not also consider contacting your local animal rescue centre first – they may have just what you are looking for.

Our Partners

At Gumtree we take animal welfare very seriously.

We work with a number of animal welfare charities, including the RSPCA, and we are an active member of the Pets Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG). PAAG is made up of animal welfare groups, vets and online classified sites, all working together to promote responsible pet advertising. Our shared goal is that all animals advertised for sale online are advertised legally and ethically.

For more information on PAAG or advice on buying a pet online, you can visit their site:

A fresh start in life
