About {{ makeName }}

Born and bred in Britain, with its plant in Luton, Bedfordshire, Vauxhall has long rivalled Ford for the UK's favourite home brand. A popular choice for first cars and family cars, Vauxhall offers a great, varied range of motors for drivers of all ages and budgets.

Vauxhall has a long history. More than 150 years of motoring history in fact. The company was founded in 1857, originally producing marine engines and pumps. The first Vauxhall car rolled off the blocks in 1903, with a 5hp engine and, somewhat worryingly, no reverse gear. It started to build a name for itself as it continued to turn out sporty little turn-of-the-century motors.

While Vauxhall is seen as a British make, it's actually been owned by General Motors for close to a century, who bought it in 1925. During WWII production switched to tank building, but post-war, utilising GM's tried-and-tested mass-production techniques, they began churning out reliable, mass-market-friendly vehicles.

Going into partnership with Opel in the 1970s, the look and feel of Vauxhall models shifted, with the majority of models being re-badged Opels. These days, Vauxhalls now have a signature 'V' on their front grilles as a distinguishing feature. Always in a bit of a road battle with Ford, Vauxhall has seriously been on the up since its 2004 launch of the Astra, which has become one of the most popular cars on the road.

Gumtree's Top Vauxhall Models

VAUXHALL ASTRA HATCHBACK

Vauxhall's signature car, and the model that reinvigorated the brand's popularity, the Astra is a solid, reliable, and attractive little motor. Available since 2004, you've got a great range of body styles to choose from, including a 3- and 5-door hatchback, 2-door coupe convertible, 4-door sedan and 5-door estate. Plenty of choice between petrol and diesel engines too, ranging from 1.3 to 2 litre, and for extra green credentials look out for post-2009 models that were retuned with eco-friendly Ecotec and EcoFLEX engines.

VAUXHALL ZAFIRA

Looking for the perfect family car? This is one of the UK's most popular. A spacious ride for five passengers, this people carrier comes with Vauxhall's innovative Flex7 seating system, that has been much-copied. Two extra occasional seats neatly fold out, while the second and third row seating can be folded away to give a flat, van-like floor - all very handy. Low servicing and insurance costs also make this a winner for families on a budget.

VAUXHALL CORSA

While the Opel Corsa that this is based on dates back to 1982, the Vauxhall version emerged in 2000 as a nippy little hatchback built to rival the Ford Fiesta. Choose between three doors, five doors, petrol, diesel and engine sizes ranging from 1.0 to 1.8 to help you cut down on fuel costs. The 1.3-litre CDTi diesel offers highly impressive mpg, and it all means lower road tax too.

VAUXHALL VXR8

This V8 has garnered rave reviews, and is a successor to the hugely popular Vauxhall Monaro, only this time there's an even bigger V8 engine to crow about. Older VXR8's offered incredibly powerful V8 engines powering rear-drive saloons, at highly competitive prices. The latest models are more sophisticated, and the price tag reflects that. Rock solidly built, with an Eaton supercharger, charge-cooling, and raft of electronics onboard, this is a smooth, reliable, and incredibly powerful drive.

VAUXHALL INSIGNIA SPORTS TOURER

This little beauty emerged in 2009, a smart, beefed up version of the earlier Insignia hatchback. This model adds acres of boot space and for passengers in the back, as well as an improved choice of engines. There's four petrol and four diesel to choose from, from the 1.6 Turbo to the 2.8 V6 Turbo, all of which feature Vauxhall's fuel-beating ECOTEC technology. It looks racy, drives well, and that higher roofline ensures a comfortable ride for all passengers.
