About {{ makeName }}

The Japanese car giant is not just the world's biggest car maker it's also the 12th biggest company - of any kind - on the planet. It's produced well over 200 million vehicles to date, from its tiny hatchbacks to cavernous off-roaders. Toyota is a brand with something for everyone.

Founded in 1933 in Toyota, Aichi, Japan, Toyota began making automated looms for the textile industry - not a car in sight. It was Kiichiro Toyoda, son of the company's founder, who had a thirst for motors, and travelled to Europe to learn the ropes. Progress was swift, and in 1934 Toyota produced its first engine, used in the G1 truck and A1 passenger car.

Through the war and beyond, Toyota specialised in truck manufacture, with a sideline in motor cars. This sideline grew, and diversified with the arrival of the Toyopet, the Crown sedan, and the Land Cruiser 4x4 in the 1950s, and the hugely successful Corolla compact in the 70s - which became the bestselling compact in the US.

Then came the introduction of Toyota's luxury car brand, Lexus. Today Toyota produces more than 10 million cars a year, has introduced models that appeal to the younger market, like the Celica, and has won recognition and acclaim for its pro-environmental efforts with its hybrid innovations bringing us the Prius.

Gumtree's Top Toyota Models

TOYOTA PRIUS

Looking for a lean, green driving machine? Toyota introduced the revolutionary Prius in 2001, powered by both a traditional petrol engine and electric motor to cut down on fuel consumption - and those nasty CO2 emissions. The later models come with 1.8 litre petrol engines and CVT automatic gearboxes to deliver more power. Its easy handling, decent size, and attractive Avensis-like looks has ensured its lasting popularity, and there are loads of exciting gadgets on board to make his number feel truly futuristic, such as the touch-screen trip computer.

TOYOTA AYGO

On the go since 2005, and available as a three-door or five-door model, the Aygo is Toyota's tip-top and hugely successful city car. Great looks, nippy performance, and very low running costs make it a winner. While the boot space is a little cramped, the passenger space is roomy, and no one can say that this isn't a fun car to drive around town. If you prefer your car aesthetics a little more pimped-up, look out for the second generation Aygo launched in 2014 - guaranteed to turn heads.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER

The original Land Cruiser dates back to 1984, and there have been five further models released since then. It's a beefy SUV that offers 4-wheel drive, roomy interiors and off-road capability. You'll find better control and stability on models produced after 2002, as this is when the Cruiser 100 was rejigged with dual fuel tank capacity increased to 180 litres and the gravity centre improved upon. If it's a diesel option you're after look for models released after 1998 as prior to this it's petrol-only.

TOYOTA YARIS

If it's a versatile town car you're after, this Toyota is a great choice. It's a compact city car available in three and five-door versions. Both are affordable and highly reliable. Roomy, with sliding rear seats and a smooth driving experience, there's also a range of economical engines to choose from, including a hybrid option that makes the Yaris the cheapest hybrid car in the UK.

TOYOTA RAV4

One of Toyota's larger models, the RAV4 has been around since 1994. In that time it's developed a legion of loyal followers, all enthusing about its handling, practicality and serious reliability. It's an SUV that's great for the city, available in front wheel- and four wheel-drive. There's plenty of room for a family of five, and the later the model the bigger the RAV4 gets, with the latest incarnation being the biggest and widest yet.
