About {{ makeName }}

A relative newbie to the automobile industry, this German branch of Daimler AG has pushed design boundaries from the get go.

Specialising in the tiniest city runarounds, Smart has excelled at teaming immense practicality and driveability with the kind of design bravado that makes their cars a little bit Marmite - you either love 'em or you hate 'em.

Founded in 1994 (we told you they were newbies), this fresh new car brand has some serious motoring heritage behind the wheel. Smart is the brainchild of German motoring giant Daimler, the same motoring giant that brings you Mercedes-Benz beauties.

Its sights firmly focused on the needs of city drivers, Smart has been turning out some of the most innovative - some would say eccentric - designs we've seen in motoring from its primary plant in Hambach, France, since the mid-90s. In fact, it first began its design brainstorming back in the 1980s, closely linked to the wacky watch manufacturer Swatch.

But underneath the head-turning aesthetics lie real motoring prowess and the kind of practical solutions that city drivers have been crying out for for years. Smart produces cars that possess the smallest turning circles known to man. If you can't find yourself a parking space in the busiest cities on earth in one of their babies then it's time to switch to public transport.

Always forward-thinking, Smart has just branched out into the eBike sector, providing city-dwellers with another innovative way to get around town with ease. In short, if you like your cars quirky, and are fed up circling the city in search of a parking space for work every day, Smart could just be the answer to your prayers.

Gumtree's Top Smart Models

Smart ForTwo Coupe

Starting with Smart's titchiest motor, it really is built for two and no more. However, that doesn't mean it isn't comfortable - despite being two feet shorter than a Mini, there's sufficient room for two six-footers to sit in happily. Trendy and fun, although a little slow, you can park just about anywhere and enjoy serious insurance savings and fuel economy too. Older models return an average of 57.6mpg or 55.4mpg depending on the engine you go for, and newer models can just creep over the 60mpg mark.

Smart ForFour Hatchback

One of the most stylish superminis out there, it's also a very enjoyable drive, even more so than the ForTwo. As you'd expect, there's excellent handling, although the firm suspension can make for a slightly firmer ride. It's the only Smart car to date that allows more than two people onboard, and this it achieves impeccably here, with comfort for all four passengers guaranteed. There's also superior build quality, it's cheap to insure, and it's widely accepted as being the best car Smart has produced to date.

Smart Roadster

If sporty's your thing, it doesn't get much sportier than this. A sort of comic-book version of a Porsche, Smart takes the typical roadster design and adds its own unique funky twists. Two adults fit comfortably without feeling cramped, and there's excellent fuel economy to enjoy - the basic model will give you 55mpg and the Brabus delivers just 2mpg less. Fun to drive, with truly one-off looks, this is one for drivers who like to attract a bit of attention on the roads.

Smart Crossblade

Easily Smart's maddest design, this is a car you're only going to get the best use from in dry weather... given that it has no roof, no windscreen, and no doors. Nippy acceleration from 0-40mph makes it perfect for whizzing to the beach when the sun is beating down, although maybe not ideal for those rain-lashed drives to work in February. If you like to be the centre of attention while you get from A to B, there are few cars that catch the eye better than this!

Smart City Cabriolet

Also known as the ForTwo Cabriolet after being rebranded in 2004, this is another unique design from Smart. A two-seater with bags of character, those who like their car's convertible will love this cheeky number. Again, it's perfect for the city, although some drivers might dislike the lack of storage space. Being on the tiny side it's incredibly cheap to run - delivering from 58mpg-64mpg depending on engine model - it's also available as a hybrid to save you even more pennies on fuel.
