About {{ makeName }}

Once a bit of a motoring laughing stock, today Skoda's reputation has changed beyond all recognition thanks to its buyout by Volkswagen in 2000.

Skoda, based in the Czech Republic, has some serious motoring history behind it, having been producing cars since 1895. In fact, it's one of the five oldest car production companies in the world, alongside Tatra, Daimler, Opel and Peugeot.

Skoda is now part of the hugely successful Volkswagen empire, with VW buying the brand in 2000 with the aim of turning it into the budget arm of its motoring output. The success of the new look Skoda has surpassed even Volkswagen's own expectations, with Skoda autos now easily rival VW's top-of-the-range output.

Thanks to Volkswagen's renowned and trusted engineering prowess and practicality, Skoda has become a watchword for reliability. In 2014 Skoda models took the top three places in an annual satisfaction survey of more than 50,000 drivers in the UK, beating BMW and Mercedes-Benz for reliability and quality.

These qualities are reflected in the insurance groups for Skoda too, ranging from Group 1 for the smallest CitiGo to Group 19 for the most powerful 4x4 Yeti model.

Skoda is a brand that aims to deliver across the board reliability, safety and neat aesthetics within an affordable price range. Steadily increasing its range of models, which now includes minis, estates, SUVs and 4x4s - the brand has gone from strength to strength in each category of these model categories, notching up global sales of 1.04 million in 2014.

Its latest move has been into the executive car market, with the launch of the acclaimed Superb luxury saloon. The rave reviews now see Skoda rivalling the likes of BMW and Mercedes, this time in terms of looks and drive quality, not just in safety and reliability.

Gumtree's Top Skoda Models

Skoda Yeti Crossover

Stylish and practical, the Yeti SUV has been a runaway success for Skoda. This affordable motor provides an excellent entry level 4x4, ideal for larger families, those driving off road, or drivers who just want a roomier ride. Its flexible seating system makes it ideal for extra passengers and luggage needs, and another big plus is running costs. Cheaper than many of it rivals in terms of servicing, it's reliability makes it cheaper to insure too.

Skoda Fabia Hatchback

This great hatchback may not turn many heads in terms of aesthetics, but it's hugely reliable, and that's why it's been such a success in the salesroom. Not the sharpest handling in the hatchback category, but still a nifty drive, it offers plenty of space too. A big boot and lots of passenger space make it ideal for families looking for something on the smaller side.

Skoda Superb Saloon

Incredibly well built, this luxury saloon car offers the most comfortable drive in the Skoda range. While the latest 2015 outing may outshine earlier models in terms of sleek aesthetics, older Superb models are nothing to sniff at. Earning rave reviews for comfort and driveability, and putting Skoda on the map alongside the likes of executive saloon pioneers BMW and Mercedes, the Superb is an affordable slice of true motoring luxury. If you're looking to save even more on running costs, 2.0-litre petrols and 1.9-litre TDIs are the most economical engines.

Skoda CitiGo

One of the best city drives around, this is essentially the affordable version of the Volkswagen Up. While it may lack some the Up's finesse, it's every bit as city-ready. Its tight turning circle and light steering make handling and parking a dream, while the body is heavy enough to feel assured out on the open road too. At £1,000 cheaper out of the starting blocks than the Up, it's easy to account for this highly reliable and economical runaround's sales success.

Skoda Octavia Estate

Looking for more space but don't want to upgrade to an SUV? Few cars offer more boot space than the Octavia Estate - it's easy to fit your bike in here by folding the seats down, without the need to remove the front wheel first. Available with everything from a 1.2-litre petrol engine to a 2.0-litre diesel, its big comfortable seats make it an economical and comfortable ride in the city and on the open road.
