About {{ makeName }}

Now the fourth biggest car manufacturer in the world thanks to its partnership with Nissan, French motoring giant Renault has long commanded a strong position in the motor industry but, like most major car makers, has had to endure some tough times along the way.

Recent years have been particularly prosperous however, thanks in part to a hot streak of releases in the 90s that helped establish Renault at the forefront of the market. The Clio, Laguna, Megane and Twingo, along with a new Espace, all emerged in the space of a few years and all proved to be significant commercial and critical successes. Many of that golden generation of models still feature prominently in the Renault range today.

The evergreen Clio has been a particularly important car for Renault over the last three decades. Its UK release was accompanied by one of the 90s most memorable advertising campaigns, the famous 'Nicole et Papa' advert, and the smash hit supermini won widespread plaudits including the 1991 European Car of the year award (the Clio won again in 2006, making it one of only two cars to win the award twice, the other being the VW Golf). The Clio was compact, lively, stylish, fun and accessible and seemed to perfectly capture the spirit of the times.

Over the years Renault has continually tweaked that wining package and today's Clio boasts enhanced refinement and practicality without losing any of the first generation's je ne sais quoi.

Alongside the more familiar hatchback stylings of the Clio, Renault has entered the emerging compact crossover market with the Captur, which beefs up the classic hatchback shape to bundle burly 4x4 looks and ample space together with the low running costs of a supermini. The Captur's fresh, quirky styling and innovative crossover credentials provides a strong counterpoint to the Clio's classic appeal and showcases Renault's readiness to develop new ideas while also keeping old favourites fresh and relevant.

Gumtree's Top Renault Models

RENAULT CLIO HATCHBACK

Renault's evergreen hatchback has maintained a place towards the front of the supermini pack for 25 years now. The fourth generation (05-13) kept up the Clio's reputation for sharp styling and affordable running costs but added an enhanced sense of quality and improved practicality to the mix. The cabin is well put together and relatively roomy, noise is kept to a minimum and the ride is pleasingly refined.

RENAULT GRAND SCENIC MPV

Renault's recent entry into the MPV market does a decent job of offering all the practicality of a 7-seater people carrier in a relatively compact and affordable package. The Grand Scenic is well priced and relatively cheap to run with some models (the 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel) capable of returning over 68mpg. Low CO2 emissions are also a boon, keeping road tax as low as £10 on some models.

RENAULT CAPTUR CROSSOVER

Designed as a rival to the Peugeot 2008, Nissan Juke and Ford EcoSport, the Captur is a strong entry into the burgeoning supermini / 4x4 market. The Captur is based on the Clio and resembles a significantly beefed up version of Renault's flagship supermini. It's competitively priced, fuel-efficient and offers a composed, comfortable driving experience. First and foremost, the Captur's fresh, distinctive styling will appeal to those on the lookout for a fun and funky car that stands out from the crowd.

RENAULT ZOE HATCHBACK

So far probably Renault's most successful venture into the electric car market, the Zoe performs much like comparable superminis and makes a pretty convincing case for going electric. It'll give you an impressive 220Nm of torque and a surprisingly gutsy bust of acceleration from a standing start and the ride is pleasingly refined and smooth thereafter. The Zoe's range is 130 miles and charging can be as quick as one hour when using a 43kW fast charger.

RENAULT MEGANE

Something of a Renault lynchpin over the course of the last 20 years, the Megane has done a fine job of keeping up with the competition in a crowded family hatchback market. In some respects the Megane benefits from such longevity, 20 years of tweaking has resulted in a car that functions smoothly and feels well put together. It's also well priced and impressively fuel-efficient compared to competition like the VW Golf. If you're in the market for serious miles per gallon performance then look no further than the 109bhp 1.5 dCi diesel which is apparently capable of 80.7mpg.
