About {{ makeName }}

The long and prosperous history of Peugeot commenced long before the age of the motor car. In fact, the company was formed in 1810 and began life making coffee, pepper and salt grinders before entering the realms of transport with a range of bicycles. By the late 1880s Peugeot were well placed to expand into early motorcar production, initially with a three-wheeled steam powered vehicle then, more convincingly, with four-wheel internal combustion powered cars that utilised a Daimler-licensed engine.

Like so many of the early motorcar companies Peugeot quickly entered the racing arena and enjoyed considerable early success on the racetrack. Indeed, the very first motor race - the Paris Rouen in 1894 - was won by Albert Lamaitre in a Peugeot, which would have been enough to assure the company's place in motor racing history even if it never competed in another race. But Peugeot's sporting prowess didn't end there; over the course of the next century Peugeot went on to perform strongly in rallying, touring and sports car racing.

Success on the racetrack served as a fine platform for Peugeot to promote its early road cars and by 1903 the company was producing half the cars built in France. 1921 saw the release of a particularly pivotal car in Peugot's history - the 201, a model that became the cheapest car on the French market at exactly the right moment in history. The release of the affordable, no-frills 201 coincided with the Wall Street crash and fit perfectly with the prevailing mood of austerity. While many car manufacturers collapsed because of the steep economic downturn Peugeot survived, in fact it emerged with a considerably enhanced reputation.

Peugeot has made a habit of producing affordable, high-volume cars ever since. The 403 (famously driven by Colombo) was the first Peugeot to sell over a million units between 1955 and 1966 and its successor, the 404, went on to enjoy even greater global success. The status of most successful Peugeot however belongs to the 205, an enormously popular supermini that won plaudits and sales across Europe.

In many ways the 205 remains the archetypal Peugeot - small, affordable, functional and fun to drive. While the current range is short of successes on a 205 scale it's well stocked with handy everyday cars that show off many of the same virtues.

PEUGEOT 207 (2006 - 2012)

Another example of Peugeot's knack for producing appealing, functional and stylish small cars, the 207 supermini is available as a three or five door hatchback and represents a solid value for money used buy that will retain its value pretty well. The 207 followed Peugeot's hugely popular 205 and 206 superminis and sold well before the introduction of its successor the 208 in 2012.

PEUGEOT 5008

Peugeot's accomplished entry into the MPV market offers bags of load space and practicality at a highly competitive price. Seven seats (each of which can be moved separately) and smartly designed load-bearing flexibility that gives you 2,506 litres of boot space with the seats down make this a great option for large families. The 5008 is also well-equipped and prettier than the average MPV. Running costs are decent - the 1.6 HDi diesel returns 56.4mpg - but not quite as frugal as Renault's Grand Scenic

PEUGEOT 3008

The 3008 SUV / MPV crossover may be less of a novelty these days that when it first emerged in 2009 but its still holds its own against the likes of Mazda's CX-5, the Skoda Yeti and the Kia Sportage. Peugeot's take on the increasingly popular crossover style is as roomy as you'd hope and offers a smooth, comfortable ride. There's plenty of equipment in the stylish, well-built cabin, especially if you opt for a higher end Allure model, and the hybrid model will give you impressively low running costs, albeit at a higher purchase price.

PEUGEOT 308

The new generation 308 picked up the European car of the year for 2014 and does a fine job of reasserting Peugeot's place alongside the leaders of the medium family hatchback pack. Revamped styling lends an air of sophistication that was missing in the previous 308 and the classy interior is also much improved. The capacious boot is definitely among the biggest in its class and running costs are extremely competitive, especially in the case of the new (introduced late 2014) 120bhp, 1.6-litre diesel models, which return 91mpg.

PEUGEOT 107 HATCHBACK (2005 - 2014)

An excellent city car, the 107 is small, nimble and agreeably stylish. The interior is straightforward but well built and performance is perfectly capable around town if a little lacking on the open road. Boot space is minimal and the rear seats are a cramped fit but for the young urban driver on the lookout for a cheap, handy city car the 107 fits the brief perfectly.
