About {{ makeName }}

Over the years Mazda has tended to do things a bit differently. The Japanese automaker is perhaps best known for its pioneering use of the Wankel rotary engine, a strategy that helped Mazda stand out from the crowd and develop new markets in the 60s and 70s. It remains something of a calling card to this day, even if the company has all but abandoned the technology in favour of the heavier but more fuel efficient piston engines.

Mazda's small but powerful signature rotary engine generally seemed most at home in performance cars and the brand has always enjoyed a strong association with racing. From the flagship Cosmo, which launched the Mazda Wankel engine in 1967 and showed off its racing credentials in the Marathon de la Route ultra-endurance race at the N»rburgring, to the 787B, which remains the only non-piston-engined car to win at Le Mans, Mazda has enjoyed considerable sporting success over the years.

Mazda's racing pedigree can frequently be recognised in its road cars. Lightweight sports cars like the RX-7 and RX-8 have been enormously popular with enthusiasts and the evergreen MX-5 roadster is now the best selling two-seater sports car in history. The MX-5, which is now into its 26th year, has been Mazda's most enduring car and perfectly embodies the brand's knack for developing affordable, populist cars with a distinctly sporty streak. Indeed, Mazda has tried to infuse all of its current line-up with something of the MX-5's agile, engaging driving experience and this focus on fun is in evidence across the range.

Gumtree's Top Mazda Models

MAZDA CX-5

Mazda's take on the increasingly ubiquitous SUV / Hatchback crossover is widely considered to be one of the class leaders. No mean feat give the healthy competition. It's hard to identify any areas in which the CX-5 is any less than impressive but high points include arguably the best driving experience in the crossover market. Sharp steering, road hugging traction and a range of genuinely feisty engines mean that the CX-5 feels more like a nimble hatchback than a characterless SUV.

MAZDA MX-5

Something of a cult favourite, the MX-5 has been around for over 25 years now but somehow still feels as fresh and fun as ever. There are faster open-top sports cars out there but the MX-5 is still hard to beat for sheer entertainment value and more than lives up to its billing as a cut price Boxster. The new fourth generation model is due for release this year and promises a lighter, more nimble driving experience than ever before but used models are well worth a look too.

MAZDA 2

There's no shortage of competition in medium sized hatchback market but the Mazda 2 does an admirable job of keeping pace with class leaders like the Fiesta, Corsa and Mini. The Mazda 2 ticks plenty of boxes - it's extremely fuel efficient, jam-packed with technology and delivers a reasonably comfortable and composed ride. It's also got plenty of character courtesy of sleek, distinctive styling and lively engines.

MAZDA 6 TOURER

Positioning itself somewhere between the Ford Mondeo and VW Passsat estates and more upmarket models from the likes of BMW and Audi, the Mazda 6 Tourer offers an appealing mix of serious load hauling practicality and exceptional fuel economy and the executive sheen of a more prestigious luxury car. Its also a surprisingly engaging drive with more speed and power at its disposal than you might expect from such a practical car.

MAZDA RX-8 (2003 - 2011)

Something of a favourite among discerning petrolheads, the RX-8 was built to deliver maximum driving entertainment at a relatively affordable price. Used models are as fun and frisky as ever and should be available for rock bottom prices. There are downsides - it guzzles fuel and has a reputation for reliability issues - but few sports cars give you as much bang for your buck as the RX-8.
