About {{ makeName }}

A British brand to be reckoned with. It might have had a ride as rough as the roads it's built to withstand, but Land Rover is still going, and still built to impress.

Land Rover is the second oldest four-wheel-drive car brand in the world - Jeep pips it to the post. The brand as a whole originates from a single Rover model, the Land Rover, produced in 1948. Rover's chief designer, Maurice Wilks, was a proud Jeep owner and wondered - why shouldn't Rover produce something this tough?

Launched to challenge Jeep's supremacy at the Amsterdam Auto Show, it was a major success. More orders were placed for it than the company could handle. Britain still being a colonial empire at the time, the Land Rover had no problem making a name for itself across the provinces, handling tough off-road conditions like a dream, whether in Africa or on the farms of the home counties.

Land Rover, the company, was set up in 1978, and has weathered some serious storms since then. The 70s recession, the collapse of the UK motor industry, fuel crises, and in 2000, a US buy-out courtesy of motoring mogul Ford, to name a few. Ford sold the company to the aptly named Indian motoring giant Tata, along with Jaguar, in 2008.

Despite all this, Land Rover powers on, still being made on British soil, and still turning out the best 4x4s in the world.

Gumtree's Top Land Rover Models

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4

The Discovery's been around since 1990, and the latest model was launched in 2013. The new-look Discovery has had powertrain tweaks, an update to its safety and infotainment system, and a more elegant grille and bumper that ties in better with the rest of the Land Rover family. Choose from a great 3.0-litre V6 petrol or diesel engine and enjoy one of the best 4x4 driving experiences there is. As an added bonus for Discovery owners, it's been being singled out by Which consumer magazine as the best value-retaining SUV/4x4, beating stiff competition from the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes too.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT

A huge luxury seven-seater SUV, this is one of Land Rover's most performance-driven cars to date. It's a versatile family car, with luxury interiors, that's really built for the city, but handles remarkably well off-road too. It'll easily wade through 85cm of water, axle articulation and wheel travel are superb, it's a real go-anywhere motor. The latest model, from 2013 onwards adds a diesel hybrid engine to the already generous petrol and diesel option. The entry-level diesel will give you best value for money, the rest eating up the fuel, particularly the insanely supercharged top-spec V8. Fast and comfortable, this is a high-end SUV that won't disappoint, but is pricey to run, and that boot space could be a little more spacious.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER DEFENDER

An iconic Land Rover, the Defender dates back to 1948. Built specifically for off-road driving, it's a rough and ready Land Rover that doesn't handle on-road so well. But if you're looking for a 4x4 that can safely take you anywhere, across the wildest terrain, and get home without a scratch, this is the one. The interior can feel a little cramped, and not everyone loves its boxy design, but if you favour practicality over luxurious comfort and slick good looks, this is a ride that won't let you down.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER EVOQUE

One of the greenest Land Rovers available, if you're worried about emissions - or fuel costs - this is a great 4x4 option. Launched in 2011, with a facelifts for 2015, none of the Evoque's petro or diesel engines exceed 2.5 litres. The 2.2-litre diesel delivers a very decent 57.6mpg, and is every bit as comfortable and smooth as Land Rover's larger models. Great around town, on long journeys, and still superb off-road, it's the perfect SUV all-rounder.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER FREELANDER 2

The Freelander emerged in 1998. Early models were plagued with mechanical issues, blown head gaskets being the most common complaint, but after some major tweaks to the 2000 relaunch this is a car that really came into its own. The latest model, the Freelander 2, launched in 2009 and is still a benchmark by which all other compact SUVs are measured. Available in two- and four-wheel drive, it's a versatile drive that performs just as smoothly off-road as it does on tarmac. Not the cheapest baby SUV option, and only available as a five-seater, the newest model is diesel-only, with two levels of power - 150bhp TD4 or the more efficient 190bhp SD4.
