About {{ makeName }}

It may no longer be in British hands, but Jaguar is still recognised the world over as a very British car make. Renowned for its world-class craftsmanship and daring good looks, the firm still specialises in the kind of cars you dream of owning - sleek and sophisticated luxury cars and sports cars, with a refined British style all their own.

Jaguar was originally founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company by motorcycle enthusiasts William Walmsley and Sir William Lyons. The name changed to Jaguar following the Second World War - because the company was keen to avoid those pesky SS initials that were now synonymous with the brutish Nazi police force.

Originally the business focused on motorcycle sidecar production, before diversifying into the burgeoning passenger car market. It did so in style, giving us the likes of the E-Type, open-top XK- 140, the Mk II, and XK-E, all of which remain motoring icons to this day.

Marking the start of Jaguar's pass-the-parcel-style fortunes, in 1966 was sold to the British Motor Corporation. This merged into British Motor Holdings, and then into British Leyland in 1968, before it was nationalized in 1975.

Jaguar broke free of British Leyland in 1984 and was snapped up by Ford in 1990. It remained in their hands until 2008 when it was sold to the Indian car giant Tata Motors. Today the firm still does a mean line in covetable, failsafe, luxury motors, and some Jaguar vehicles are still produced on British soil too. On top of that, its engineering prowess means it's still making one of the finest V8 petrol engines on the planet.

Gumtree's Top Jaguar Models

JAGUAR F-TYPE

Certainly not the cheapest Jaguar on the market, the F-Type is a seriously sharp sports car that's picked up exceptional reviews around the world. One of the most exciting cars Jaguar has produced to date, with three rear wheel drive models to choose from - a 335bhp V6, 375bhp V6 S and a ferocious 488bhp V8 S. Basically this is close as Jaguar gets to delivering a roadster - a strict two-seater that deliver tremendous power, speed, and prestige.

JAGUAR XE

A lovely long saloon that retains some sporty character, the XE is perfect for families, and is highly favoured by the company car market too. Plenty of space for four adults, this is basically a compact executive car. Five spectacularly smooth engines to choose from, including, remarkably, a diesel with such small emissions it doesn't actually qualify for road tax, as well as a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol for those looking for more torque and speed.

JAGUAR XF

Top Gear calls this the best car that Jaguar makes, and who are we to argue? One of the best-designed interiors money can buy, superb drive and build quality - it's a masterclass in effortlessly fast, distinctive motoring. Again you have that supercharge 3.0-litre V6 engine option, alongside a couple of 5.0-litre petrol V8s and a 2.2-litre diesel that'll get you 50mpg. Choose between the sleek, longline, and practical XF Sportbrake Estate, the XF Saloon and the XFR Saloon.

JAGUAR XJ

The latest XJ model marked a jawdropping design change from Jaguar. Ditching its decades-old XJ styling in favour of a more beefed-up yet smaller chassis, similar to the XF, it's been a rip-roaring success. A modern, luxurious, and hugely powerful saloon, it's a top-of-the-line executive drive with strikingly futuristic styling. The latest model also delivers big improvements in diesel efficiency, so you can save on running costs after you've splurged on this little beauty.

JAGUAR XK

The XK is one of Jaguar's signature coupes, produced for decades as a line of hugely successful and exhilarating sports cars. The new look XK series is more diverse than ever. There's the Coupe, Cabriolet, Dynamic R, XKR Cabriolet and the XKR-S Coupe. With its supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine option you can set the kind of pace to rival a supercar too.
