About {{ makeName }}

Yep, it's another Korean budget carmaker - and where would we be without them? In Hyundai's case we'd have fewer decent hatchbacks, SUVs, MPVs, estates and tasty tourers to choose from. The Hyundai line-up is ever-expanding, and on the whole it's a rip-roaring success.

The Hyundai story starts in South Korea in the 1940s with the entrepreneurial spirit of its founder, Chung Ju Yung. Born into a poor farming family, by 1947 Yung had started a highly profitable construction and engineering business. His profits helped him raise the capital he needed to establish the Hyundai Motor Company in 1967, Korea's first car producer.

A year later the company signed a technology sharing agreement with Ford, allowing Hyundai access to Ford's know-how and resources. The result was the Cortina, speedily followed up by the Pony, Hyundai's first 100% Korean designed and built model. In 1975 it also became the first Hyundai to be sold overseas.

It made its first foray into the American market with the Excel sub-compact in 1988 - and it was an instant hit. Sales floundered in the 90s following reports of poor reliability, but after some seriously heavy investment in new design and technology, the release of a slew of attractive new models, and the introduction of 5 to 10-year warranties as standard to allay those poor reliability fears, Hyundai was back and bigger than ever.

Today Hyundai is the world's fourth largest auto manufacturer on the planet, selling its vehicles in 193 countries, and employing over 75,000 people worldwide. It's also the proud owner of the world's largest auto plant, turning out an astounding 1.6 million units every year - and if the critics are anything to go by, their turn-out is an increasingly impressive and diverse line-up.

Gumtree's Top Hyundai Models

HYUNDAI SANTA FE

Originally launched in 2000, we're now onto the fifth generation Santa Fe, with the most recent facelift happening in 2012. And what a facelift. Not that this SUV really needed it - all previous models gained high praise. The 2012 model is easily the best looking yet - a very agreeable 4x4 indeed, that seriously rivals the likes of the Honda CR-V. Superb value for money, reliable, spacious, generously kitted out, and the 2.2-litre diesel engine is smooth, powerful, and more fuel efficient than ever.

HYUNDAI I10

Hyundai's stellar city car delivers high-speed stability, practicality, superior comfort even on longer drives, and it's cheap as chips to boot. Two small petrol engine options both deliver low running costs, and are fantastically quiet too. The overall feel is one of refinement - a city car with a superior big car feel. Lovely to drive and offering superb build quality, what's not to like?

HYUNDAI I30 ESTATE

Built around the same inner workings as the highly-praised Kia C'eed, the estate version of Hyundai's i30 is an even more attractive package. Looking oh-so-similar to the BMW 1-Series, it feels truly upmarket inside, despite that bargain price tag. Built for families, there's five doors, a spacious back seat and ample boot space. Choose from a range of small petrol engines, or the cheaper 1.6 CRDi diesel that gives you 60.1mpg.

HYUNDAI I40

This is the largest car in Hyundai's ei' range, which you can pick up as a five-door tourer estate or a four-door saloon. Clearly aimed to take on the Ford Mondeo, it does so and then some. Superb build quality, a slew of trim levels and powerful yet efficient engines to choose from, and impressive drive and stability, Hyundai have delivered a real winner here. Favouring smooth driveability and comfort over sportiness, this well-equipped and competitively-priced saloon is one of the very best family cars on the market today.

HYUNDAI VELOSTER

And if it's sporty you want, Hyundai can deliver that too. With the latest model offering a new turbo motor, the Veloster is out to rival the likes of the Astra GTC and Scirocco. It's a compact sports coupe that replaces the old Hyundai Coupe, adding the company's first ever dual-clutch transmission, and the new BlueDrive system that delivers real-time vehicle analysis to the driver. A nifty little number that's distinctive for its clever e2+1' door system.
