About {{ makeName }}

Honda is the Japanese brand that's taken Europe by storm. In recent years it's also shaken off its OAP-friendly image with its increasingly cool and eclectic output of truly stellar-quality cars. The likes of the Honda Civic, Jazz and Accord still pick up rave reviews and then, of course, there's the build quality - the best in the world, second-to-none.

Rising out of the ashes of the Second World War at a time when the Japanese motor industry was in a daze, Soichiro Honda founded the company in 1948. Honda set its sights on producing a cheap means of transport for post-war Japan. Strapping an engine to a bike, Honda's Model D was born, becoming a huge seller across the country. During the 1970s Honda grew to become the world's biggest motorbike producer, with bikes and scooters still a mainstay of the Honda Motor Group today.

Honda's first car, the T360 pick-up truck, emerged in 1963, essentially a Kei car. Its product line expanded to include sports cars like the S500, and the luxury Acura brand, launched in 1986. Into the 90s Honda began focusing on recreational vehicles like the CR-V and Odyssey, ditching its expensive ties with Formula One racing along the way in favour of portraying a more eco-friendly image.

Now firmly targeting the western market, Honda began producing American-oriented family-friendly cars, like the Civic and Accord. Their success led to Honda opening a production plant on US soil - the first Japanese car company to do so. It now produces cars in the UK too.

Today Honda is the fifth-biggest car producer in the world. Innovations like its V-Tec engine and a slew of safety improvements have seen the brand earn a name for itself as a builder of safe and reliable cars that bring remarkable build quality to the mainstream car market.

Gumtree's Top Honda Models

HONDA ACCORD

The latest Honda Accord appeared in 2012, the ninth generation of Honda's bestselling sedan. It's a mid-size saloon that oozes luxury, rivalling the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. It's well built, has the option of Honda's remarkably good, and frugal, 2.2-litre diesel engine, and comes with a generous amount of equipment onboard too. A bit pricey new, it's a real, reliable bargain used.

HONDA CIVIC

This five-door Honda hatchback offers the car maker's usual bombproof build quality, and has character in spades. The Civic's futuristic look revolutionised Honda's image in the UK, helping it attract a younger audience than ever. Also available as a three-door in the sportier S type, the interior and boot space are constant throughout the range. For ultimate fuel-efficiency opt for the sophisticated 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel - it emits just 94g/km and averages 78.5mpg.

HONDA JAZZ

The ultimate compact Honda family car. It's a sort-of five-door supermini that sits somewhere between the Ford Fiesta and the larger Citroen C3 Picasso. The tall and deep boot add to the practicality and space on offer, as does the clever seat design - rear seats fold totally flat, and can be flipped up like cinema seating to reveal a large under-seat storage area. Choose from a range of highly economical small petrol engines or the electric/petrol hybrid.

HONDA CIVIC TOURER

Not enough space in your Civic hatchback? Then the Civic Tourer Estate is for you. There's a 1.8-litre petrol engine, but the diesel option gives way more value for money. The 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel gives you an impressive 74.3mpg and emits just 99g/km of CO2, so you'll qualify for free road tax. Honda seems to have put comfort at the forefront with this one, extending head and legroom, a MirrorLink infotainment system, and a huge boot too.

HONDA CR-V SUV

Honda's fourth generation CR-V comes straight out of Swindon, and this latest model refined the packaging, improved the fuel economy, and maintained the flawless build quality. While it's certainly not the most exciting SUV drive on the market there is nothing to fault it - its reliable, precise, comes with a four-wheel drive option, with a range of punchy petrol and diesel engine options. Its huge boot makes it a favourite for the school run, and there's plenty of clever storage space in the cabin.
