About {{ makeName }}

The UK's favourite home-grown motor isn't actually home-grown any more. But that hasn't affected its popularity as a tried-and-trusted purveyor of reliable, versatile and affordable cars that handle perfectly on British roads. From hatchbacks to SUVs, there's a Ford for everyone, and they're still the best built mainstream cars on the planet.

Henry Ford got the ball rolling in 1902, setting up his company's first factory in Detroit. Starting out with the Model A, then the Model K and the Model S, it was with the Model T, introduced in 1908, that the quintessential Ford arrived. Reliable, practical, and affordable it became a huge hit in the US, cementing the company's place in the motoring history books. Suddenly cars were affordable to all, not just the upper classes.

Ford would go on to revolutionise car production, its assembly line innovations turning cars into affordable mass-production products for the first time. A series of cult classic emerged following WWII - the Thunderbird, the Falcon and the Mustang of the 1960s - and Ford moved into Europe in 1967.

Ford set up shop in the UK, with production facilities giving us a whole string of classics still familiar to British roads. The Cortina, Anglia, Escort, Fiesta, Sierra, Capri, the Transit van, and the hugely popular Ford Focus and Mondeo - the list goes on. Acquiring Jaguar and Land Rover in the UK, and selling these off in 2011, Ford stopped producing cars on British soil altogether in 2013.

Today Ford is still Britain's top-selling car brand, with almost 800 dealers nationwide and a wide selection of cars firmly aimed at the family market. From the little Ka to the Kuga SUV, all Fords perform brilliantly in terms of build quality and reliability, cost of repairs, quality interiors and impressive as-standard equipment.

Gumtree's Top Ford Models

FORD KA

This nifty little hatchback is available in no fewer than seven trim levels, although, to keep things simple, each is only available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine. Entry-level models keep things to a bare minimum for ultra-affordability, so if you want your equipment bundle to include the likes of air-conditioning, opt for at least the Edge model. While it doesn't offer bags of interior space compared to its rivals, it's cheap to run, incredibly reliable and a more comfortable drive than the Fiat 500.

FORD FIESTA

Behold, Britain's best-selling car. Why so? Because this Ford hatchback holds its value, is fun to drive, offers up deliciously modern looks, an extensive line of three- and five-door trims, impressive petrol and diesel engines - particularly the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol. The ECOnetic diesels deliver unbeatable fuel-economy, while performance-lovers can opt for the sporty ST models. Rave reviews across the board mean whatever model you choose you've bagged a winner.

FORD FOCUS

When the Ford Focus arrived on the scene it had a tough job - competing directly with already popular British favourites like the Vauxhall Astra and VW Golf. The result? Ford came up trumps, and the Focus re-energised the brand, restoring its popularity across the UK and Europe. Whichever model you choose you'll find it a great drive, lovely handling, practically designed for family use, with comfort at the forefront. There are plenty of models to choose from too - the hatchback, the estate and powerful ST versions of both, all are five-door.

FORD MONDEO

This is a firm family favourite. While you might think of the Mondeo as being a little bland, later models are anything but. Several facelifts were delivered throughout the Mondeo's run, revamping that attractive exterior, with ten petrol and diesel engines to choose from, and a trim level to suit every pocket. Even budget buyers were rewarded in the equipment stakes, with entry-level Mondeos being surprisingly well kitted out.

FORD KUGA

And for your SUV needs, here's the Kuga. The biggest Ford model in our line-up, this is a compact SUV that's available in both tw0- and four-wheel drive. Reviews liken the driven experience to driving a tall Ford Focus, awarding it points for its great looks and driveability. While there are SUVs out there that offer more storage space, the interior itself is spacious and it comes with a good range of economical diesel engines.
