Buying or adopting a pet online

Follow our top tips to buy or adopt from people who care as much about pet welfare as you do:

  • Choose carefully, to make sure your new pet is right for your lifestyle and budget.
  • Online research can help you find the right breed, and learn about your pet's needs.
  • If buying from a breeder, ask for references, and visit them to see the environment where your pet has been reared.
  • Never choose a pet out of pity (for example an animal who looks small and sickly). Let your head rule your heart until you're sure that your potential pet has a clean bill of health, and if you are concerned that an animal may be suffering due to ill-treatment or neglect, contact the RSPCA.
  • If adopting a pet, find out as much as you can from your pet's current owner (or shelter) about their temperament and history. Some pets have been ill-treated in the past and need extra support and patience.
  • Collect face to face, to avoid your pet being transported, and protect yourself from fraudsters.
  • Spay or neuter your new pet, in line with recommendations from many animal welfare charities.
