Leith, Edinburgh

We have the opportunity for a co-facilitator to join Fast Forward and the BME Mission Possible team. The group meets weekly and has been set up to educate Black and Minority Ethnic young men on a variety of topics such as sexual health, substance misuse, knife crime, domestic abuse, violence, mental health and social wellbeing. It is felt that there are currently few resources available for young men on health related issues, with none specifically for BME young men. This is something we would like to change.

This role would be perfect for someone looking for experience in community education, social work or youth work. You will provide support to the Fast Forward worker when running these sessions. This entails the planning of educational activities, sports and trips. These outings offer increased independence to the young men by offering them a range of experiences and activities in order to develop life skills.

Fast Forward is based in Leith, which is where the training and monthly planning meetings will be held. The weekly BME Mission Possible meetings are at Telford College, expenses for bus travel will be covered. BME Mission Possible meet on Fridays between 3-5pm, with 30mins required before to get set up and organised. Planning for these meetings will happen once a month at a time which is mutually convenient.

Since this is mens group, we require a male peer education volunteer who is aged between16-25 who is a friendly, enthusiastic young man, with an interest in youth work. An understanding of BME, diversity and equal opportunity issues would be an advantage, however if you’re willing to learn, that’s grand too. You will receive training on substance misuse awareness combined with health and wellbeing information in addition to cultural and diversity guidance.
