Position: Night Duty Supervisor
Location: Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel, 9 Haddington Place, Edinburgh, EH7 4AL
Hours per week: 40 hours per week (on shift). (SYHA reserves the right to ask you to change your normal hours of work, whether temporarily or permanently, according to the needs of the business and it is a condition of your contract of employment that you agree to any such request when reasonably made.)
Salary: £13,500 per annum

The Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA Hostelling Scotland) is Scotland’s largest network of tourist hostels, with around 60 locations spread across the country. A self-funding charitable organisation, our purpose is to help all, but especially young people, to experience Scotland’s natural heritage and places of historic and cultural interest. We are currently seeking to appoint a Night Duty Supervisor to provide a high standard of guest care within our Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel.
The main responsibilities of this position include supporting General Manager and Duty Manager in all aspects of running the hostel, maintaining the security of Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel at all times and taking appropriate action to ensure the Health & Safety and security of guests, staff and visitors to the hostel during the night. The role also includes supervising hostel assistants and night porters working in evening shifts, full reception service to hostel guests, including check-in/out, taking computer reservations, maintaining bed plans, handling customer enquiries and providing information, guidance and support to guests making onward travel plans. Job holder must have flexible attitude to work, being hands-on in undertaking general duties including overnight cleaning duties, security walks around the hostel and preparing the dining room for breakfast service.
Applications will be considered favourably from candidates who have worked in the hospitality industry, have some previous experience of night working, supervisory experience, good IT literacy including working knowledge of MSOffice, practical knowledge of Health & Safety at Work, COSHH, HACCP and previous experience of dealing with fire evacuation procedures. Good knowledge of F&B, C&B and house keeping would be an advantage. Also knowledge of the local and surrounding area and an understanding of more than one language would also be an advantage.
The provision of customer service during busy times can be demanding, including emergency cover on short notice. Flexibility and adaptability as well as a can-do attitude and the ability to work under pressure will be an important attribute of the candidate.
Due to the nature of this position, the post holder must be available to work primarily night time hours including weekend shifts. Typical working pattern is 10pm – 8 am shifts, 4 days on, 3 days off based on 40 hours a week.
