Job Title: Hostel Assistant/Housekeeping and General

Location: Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel, 9 Haddington Place, Edinburgh, EH7 4AL

Hours per week: 40 (SYHA reserves the right to ask you to change your normal hours of work, whether temporarily or permanently, according to the needs of the business and it is a condition of your contract of employment that you agree to any such request when reasonably made.)

Contract: Fixed term, immediate start until 31/Jan/14

Salary: £6.31 per hour

Accommodation: This is a live-out position.

The Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA Hostelling Scotland) is Scotland’s largest network of tourist hostels, with around 70 locations spread across the country. A self-funding charitable organisation, our purpose is to help all, but especially young people, to experience Scotland’s natural heritage and places of historic and cultural interest. We aim to provide comfortable, value accommodation with a friendly welcome for visitors of all ages, nationalities and cultures. We are currently seeking to appoint a Hostel Assistant/Housekeeping & General to provide a high standard of professional, efficient and effective guest service within Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel.

The post holder will take on responsibility of maintaining the overall cleanliness of the hostel’s guest rooms to a high standard by cleaning all assigned areas including public areas thoroughly on a daily basis and performing deep cleaning projects as assigned. Good understanding of cleaning systems, awareness of COSHH with eye for details are essential for this role.

Duties will also include making and stripping beds, cleaning including bathrooms and toilets, corridors and lists, and polishing floors, windows, mirrors and all other surfaces, vacuuming, shampooing carpets, removing all litter from the room, dusting thoroughly all surfaces, reporting maintenance issues to Hostel Management, helping evacuate guests for emergency as directed by the Fire Warden and carrying out other duties within the hostel as and when required by Hostel Management.

Please note that a job holder must be able to work mainly day shift and the occasional evening hours including weekends. The role involves some physical activities such as making or stripping beds including upper and lower bunk beds and pushing heavy linen trolleys.
