TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. TENS is recognised as a safe and highly effective method of relieving pain. Tens machines are effective in easing labour pains and cramps. They are also safe and simple to use, with no known side effects. TENS is now regularly recommended by doctors, midwifes, physiotherapists and pharmacists throughout the UK.

This machine is designed to have a boost button for use throughout labour. This button increases the intensity of the pain relief stimulation to the maximum whilst you are experiencing a contraction. At the onset of labour, simply apply 4 gel pads (not supplied) to your back as directed, and increase the intensity to the desired level. TENS provides a mild and comfortable pulsing sensation through these pads which in turn provide you with a drug free, highly effective and non-invasive method of labour pain relief.

The level of pain relief obtained varies from person to person. Some find that TENS machines provide all the pain relief required during the whole of labour, whilst others find it relieves pain during the first stage but other analgesics are also needed during the second and third stage.

It is advisable to become familiar with your unit before labour. Commence use as early as you can after the onset of labour, allowing time for your bodys pain killing chemicals to rise to an effective level.
