James Silver 30' Silverette ‘Shelagh’
Mid 1930s designed by John Bain and built by Silver’s at Roseneath on the Clyde.
The boat is carvel built pitch pine on oak. Over the past few months many planks have been done in pitch pine. Lots of timbers have also been replaced in American oak around the stern and gunwales have been replaced from midships to the transom which has also been renewed in oak. The belting has been partly removed and needing to be refitted as I had to remove it to work on the top planks.
The wheelhouse, after cabin and side decks have been replaced in grade 1 birch ply and coated with resin. The decks have had some planks and beams replaced and fibre glassed, the boat is dry inside. There is an opening hatch on the after deck, and 7 original opening portholes to be refitted to the after cabin. Original mahogany opening hatch on the bow deck.
Forward there is the saloon (2 berths with water bags under) with galley to port with sink and 2 burner cooker and storage to starboard. The wheelhouse needs fitted out (engine below). Going aft from the wheelhouse the heads are to starboard with original baby blake sea toilet with original instructions and a large locker to port. Separate aft cabin with 2 berths. The fore and aft cabins maintain almost all of the fine woodwork from the original outfit.
Engine is a brand new Ford FSD 2.5 litre 4 cylinder, fully marinised by Freedom Marine complete with wiring loom and panel. Reconditioned Borg Warner 2:1 gearbox with brand new propeller. The fuel system is in from two galvanised fuel tanks (one either side, midships) approx 45 gallon each through prefilter/water trap then to the engine filter. Exhaust is also in, through silencer/water trap and out through transom.
All of the original deck stanchions are in storage, along with new stainless steel fixings. There is also a mast for the bow deck which is in excellent order with a stainless steel tabernacle.
I am selling the boat as I no longer have time to finish it due to work commitments. I have a lot of equipment in storage that I have bought for her over time such as deck fittings, fenders, gas water heater and a 12v water pump (2 fresh water bags under forward bunks) and a few more that will be included with in the sale.
Currently ashore near Glasgow. Ongoing storage can be arranged with yard or loaded onto transport. Boatyard has facilities including engineers and traditional boat builders.
