When the Oxford Folk Festival was cancelled in 2011, the local folkies of Oxford determined not to sit at home on a sunny weekend in April pulled together to create Folk Weekend in its place. The good news is were doing it all again in 2012!
There are a few changes in store for this year: the festival will be based at the newly refurbished Old Fire Station on George Street. This is where the main box office will be, and where you can buy tickets during the weekend. Well be using the theatre for concerts and ceilidhs, and the dance studio for workshops and small concerts. There will also be workshops in the Loft on Sunday, and some teeny tiny concerts tucked away in corners of the building all weekend! The OFS has an excellent cafe, run by Crisis it does amazing food, and will also be running a bar for us in the evenings.
The other main venues for the weekend are the Wesley Memorial Church and Church Hall, which will host our main concert on Saturday evening as well as a day full of family events, and Oxford Castle gardens, where you will find a trade fair and some Morris displays. Were infiltrating the city centre this year with Folk in Funny Places; confirmed venues are the Ashmolean Museum and the Westgate Central Library but where else will you find us?!
Friday night sees the launch of the all new Friday Fringe where local organisations and bands have a chance to showcase some of their best talent. Oxford Folk Club and Foolish Folk will both be hosting events, and were pleased to welcome some new local bands as well. (Please note, Fringe events are ticketed separately and are not included in your season ticket price.)
