Hi, my name is Emily.
I am currently embarking on a Masters at the University of Oxford.
I have achieved a higher upper second class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford.
My work over the last 2 years with education project, The Hackney Pirates, has given me plenty of experience working one-to-one with children of different abilities and behavioural standards on literacy, numeracy and creativity.
I have tutored A-level economics to a student who was unable to attend school due to a hospital operation. I followed his teacher's guidance in order to ensure that he was not falling behind the class and was also able to go over work from previous terms that he had not fully understood. The student went on to achieve an A* in his economics A-level.
I have tutored a number of children, aged 6-12, in my local area; Hackney. This included basic numeracy and literacy up to entrance exam assistance. In each case the school teachers reported visible improvement in the child's ability and 3 of the 4 quickly progressed to higher sets in Maths and English.
During the summer of 2010, I taught English language at a school in Uganda. this taught me how to explain the language clearly, to classes of up to 50 children and gave me confidence in my ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Approach to tutoring
I am a good communicator and have always enjoyed getting to know children and feel a personal sense of achievement from watching them progress intellectually.
I believe that all children are academically capable and that it is important to be flexible and creative in teaching methods in order to engage children and young adults in order to realise their full potential.
I think that inner confidence and determination are what it takes for people to do well at each stage of the learning process and try to use my energy and enthusiasm to inspire these qualities in those that I work with.
Depending on the needs of the student, I am able to adapt and tailor the sessions either to academic rigour or to engagement and enjoyment. For example the approach I would use for someone looking to apply to Oxbridge is extremely different to that I would use to engage those who are disinterested or distracted at school.
