"Blinking in the sun"
mahogany style frame.
The picture shows an old cottage window, with cracked glass and worn stone sill. The tabby cat is flanked by pots with springtime plants - hyacinth and tulip. The picture also includes a geranium - the most common cottage pot plant.
Hedley was a successful portrait painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879. He was also well known for his genre scenes and depictions of local life; Blinking in the Sun (Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle), which depicts a cat sitting on a windowsill is perhaps his most famous painting. = 20 pounds
