Volunteer / charity work London
Can you help us with a Charity Ball?
Hello,
The Tea Leaf Trust (reg charity number 1123427) is a new charity established to end the exploitation of the tea-picking communities in Sri Lanka.
If you are free on the evening of the 22nd November and would like to come and help run the ball... we need 20 people to help us serve the wonderful three-course sit down meal, a couple of people to help behind the bar... we would be extremely grateful.
The money we would save from a volunteer rather than a paid member of staff is equivalent to a teacher's monthly salary in Sri Lanka... this is a wonderful way to help educate and lift aspiration levels within this forgotten community and should be a lot of fun...
After forcibly moving over 200,000 workers from Southern Indian in the 19th Century, the British left them with no human rights and governed only by their tea estates when they withdrem in 1949. The majority still live in squalid line rooms where one single room houses 8 to 10 people with no access to electricity of running water. Alcoholicism, malnutrition, domestic and sexual abuse are rife as well as the level of suicide being the highest for women in South East Asia.
The first Community Centre, offering Vocational Training for 100 students alongside professional English and IT, health awareness and women's rights projects will be opening in 2009 and we are coming to the end of our fundraising campaign. My wife and I will be relocating to Sri Lanka to commit to the project long-term and would love to chat to you about any aspect of our aims and objectives.
Please get in touch if you are reliable and can commit to helping us between 6pm and midnight at this event. If you know anyone who may be interested, please promote the event for us.... I can email you through a flyer...
Thanks,
Tim
