Adventure trek project managers needed overseas
Raleigh, an education charity which relies on teams of experienced volunteer managers in project and field based roles to help run community, environment and adventure expeditions for young people (venturers) aged 17-24 from all walks of life.
We urgently need adventure/trek project managers for our 2010 expeditions. Please get in touch if you are interested in applying.
Requirements
Aged 25 to 80, common sense, flexibility, drive, teamworking and some roles require specialist skills.
The role of adventure project manager is one of considerable independence and autonomy. As adventure project manager you’ll organise and co-ordinate an adventure project in a remote area with little external support, facilitating a group of young people in a cross-cultural environment, often isolated from the rest of the expedition team.
The responsibilities
• To create a safe yet adventurous experience for young people
• One to one support and coaching for young people to ensure they get the most from the experience
• Facilitating group development and resolving group conflict when required with particular regard to cross-cultural need
• Managing and accounting for all equipment issued
• Instructing groups in skills necessary to achieve the project’s objectives
• Keeping field base and the country director informed at all times of general progress and any incidents on the project site
• In daily communication with field base
• Liaising with the logistics manager over project logistics requirements
The skills
• Willingness to be flexible and put the needs of the expedition and the venturers first
• Either mountain leader qualified or extensive experience in trekking or other outdoor activities, e.g. canoeing
• Open to personal development concepts and willing to engage in own development
• Able to manage demanding and sometimes conflicting responsibilities in a physical, remote and dynamic environment
• Display effective personal leadership and develop leadership skills of others
• Plan logically and in detail producing practical, effective solutions to achieve goals or overcome real problems
• High level of interpersonal skills to listen, empathise and work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds
• Able to manage financial and material resources
The benefits:
• You’ll be making a genuine difference to host communities and environments - with a permanent field base in each country our staff are able to build long-term relationships with project partners to ensure the projects are worthwhile and sustainable.
• You get to explore off-the-beaten track because Raleigh gets into areas other tourists don’t have access to.
• You gain satisfaction from helping venturers on their way to being the best they can be, developing your own confidence and learning many new skills along the way .
• Raleigh welcomes people from all backgrounds and nationalities, including the host country, so you’ll experience a unique exchange of cultures and make long-lasting friendships.
One thing is certain - there is no such thing as a typical day on a Raleigh expedition!
Please note that all volunteer managers will be expected to pay/fundraise a certain amount to go on expedition. Please get in touch to fid out further information.
