What is capoeira?
Capoeira is a martial art that was developed in Brazil almost 400 years ago by slaves who were captured in Africa to work in the sugar plantations and mines.
They hid “Capoeira” (or kapuera) from the eyes of their Portuguese “masters” or “lords” by camouflaging it as a dance because martial arts were completely forbidden. Capoeira isn’t a dance…. it’s the only fighting style from South America and is the most popular sport in Brazil after football!
What is Okaras?
Okaras is an international organization created 5 years ago by Master: Oscar Jaramillo (Caholio)
to promote the art of Capoeira, its culture and its style of life around the world.
Now Capoeira Okaras is in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and now England.
Why I should try capoeira?
It is excellent for self-defence, is a wonderful exercise and more than a sport. With Capoeira you can learn basic Portuguese, how to play a variety of capoeira’s instruments and gain a knowledge of the Brazilian culture. Capoeira also improves your:
-Fitness
-Agility
-Reflexes
-Stamina
-Discipline
-Self-control
Capoeira is “fun”…. It is for everyone, men and women at any age. You can train as an individual or with a group of friends.
What do I need to start capoeira?
All you need is comfortable clothes, a bottle of water and most importantly “WILLPOWER”.
Capoeira isn’t as hard as it looks, with just a little bit of practice you’ll improve and in a couple months you’ll see results.
Does capoeira have a graduation system?
Like the rest of martial arts, capoeira has its own system of cordas “belts” based on the same colours as the Brazilian flag, the colour of the slaves’ skin and their blood that was spilt in combat.
Each group of capoeira has its own belt’s system that is determined by its Mestre “master” who is the person in charge of the promotion ceremony called Batizado, where every capoeirista “student of capoeira” gets their name of war or nick name.
Remember: the grade of your belt reflects your experience and dedication to your training.
So change your routine and try something different come and join us…..practice capoeira with the group OKARAS
