The shambles of the book trade
Hello folks,
As a relatively-new publisher, it would be good to point out the almost impossible task that I have on my hands and which is ultimately going to defeat me. A number of people (especially in retail) seem to harbour the illusion that my books are mass-produced at a cost of about £2 per copy. It costs me about £4 or £5 to produce a book and deliver it. Gardners and most retailers take a discount of 40% (some would prefer even more). If my books cost £9.99, this leaves me with literally loose change in terms of profit. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the book trade is geared largely towards celebrities and doesn't lend itself to newcomers. This certainly runs at a variance from the political parties' desire to see individuals branching out into free enterprise and self-employment.
