We are looking for a happy, energetic, friendly and adaptable female live-in carer for our mother, aged 76. (We would consider a couple). She has Motor Neurone Disease and therefore needs help in order that she can continue to live her beloved family home. She has always been a very sociable and active person but sadly now she has difficulty using her hands and arms and gets tired very easily. As the disease progresses swallowing is becoming more difficult and this means that she can only eat a limited diet of food and her speech can become slurred when tired. We are therefore looking for someone who would be able to help with showering, washing and dressing, and preparing appropriate meals for her. Importantly, we are also looking for someone who would be able to help Mum continue to be as sociable as possible as her large family and friends mean everything to her. She loves company and conversation. She also has a very faithful, well-natured dog so a love of animals is essential.
Your duties would include:
- Shopping for food and preparing all meals
- Help with showering, dressing and personal care
- Changing bed linen, laundry, ironing
- Tidying Mum’s bedroom and doing light household cleaning (A cleaner comes once a week)
- Walking and feeding Bessie, the dog
- Providing conversation and company
- Driving Mum to see friends and family
- Accompanying Mum on trips to the theatre and other activities
You will need:
- A clean driving licence. Mum has her own car but your own car would be a bonus
- Current CRB check

This is a live-in post that involves 6 hours care work per day, 7 days a week (in the first instance. The hours and pay may increase as the job evolves). You’ll be able to go out during the day but it is necessary that you can provide all meals and be home at night.
You'll have your own room and sitting room in a large house, 1 hours drive, or half an hour train ride from London. The house is a large family home in Hertfordshire with a big garden with large vegetable patch, surrounded by countryside. An interest in gardening would be beneficial although Mum has a gardener. There is a village within easy walking distance and a large town 10 mins away by car. There is a local train station with direct trains to Euston and Clapham Junction. This post would ideally suit a mature person (35 plus) who speaks good English, a ‘homebody’ who likes dogs, the countryside, and likes the company of a much loved mother and grandmother to many.

Salary £200 per week (based on a single person) or £300 per couple, including bills (excluding telephone). Start date January 2010. Position for at least 6 months but looking for someone long term.
