London editorial / writing / journalism jobs

Junior Freelance Writer, Afronews

Date posted: Monday 2nd November
Location: London

We are looking for an enthusiastic, recent graduate to join our small, multicultural, editorial team at My Own Media based in Angel.

You will be delivering content on community affairs relevant to the African and Black UK population under direct supervision of the Chief Editor of Afronews.

Afronews is a monthly free-press paper featuring news and guides for UKk- and foreign-born Black citizens in the UK. It was born in 2007 as Africa News and has broadened its reach in 2009 by changing its name to Afronews.

It has gained the trust of the community very rapidly, achieving the prestigious Black Community Newspaper Award (African Achievers Awards) and nominated for Best community newspaper (BEFFTA Awards).

Editor-in-chief Stephen Ogongo won the Communication/Media Award (African Achievers Award) and was nominated as Best Kenyan journalist in UK.

You will need to have a great sense of news and the will to move around to follow news.

Presence in the office is not obligatory – we rely on skype to keep in touch with all reporters – but we do require your presence where the action is at: shows, awards, celebrations that are newsworthy.

Good connections in the community would be an advantage.

We will cover your travel expenses and a fixed sum per issue. Remuneration will depend upon experience.

If you feel you have what it takes, email your cv and a covering letter to afronews@myownmedia.co.uk
