Drivers needed for expeditions in 2010
Raleigh, an education charity relies on teams of experienced volunteer managers in project and field based roles to help run community, environment and adventure expeditions for young people (venturers) aged 17-24 from all walks of life. The time commitment for drivers in Costa Rica & Nicaragua is 13 weeks.
We urgently need drivers for our Costa Rica & Nicaragua 2010 expeditions. Please get in touch as soon as possible if you are interested.
Requirements
Aged 25 to 80, common sense, flexibility, drive, teamworking and some roles require specialist skills.
The responsibilities
• To drive vehicles safely to the guidelines set out in the Raleigh International Vehicle Driving Rules and Regulations and the driving laws of the country
• To undertake risk assessment when driving as dictated by weather and road conditions
• To ensure the safe carriage of equipment using securing equipment such as cargo nets and rachet straps
• To undertake minor maintenance to standards set out in the specific vehicle guidelines and the vehicle maintenance systems
• To update maintenance records of each vehicle on computer systems
• To operate the vehicle radio communications systems and to maintain close communications with field base at all times
• To assist with the logistics requirements of the expedition under the supervision of the logistics team
• To understand and comply with our safety ethos
• To be available for emergency transport movements whilst adhering to the minimum rest period guidelines
Please note that around 50% of your time will be spent driving and the
other 50% will be spent undertaking logistics duties where you will be responsible for areas such as communications equipment & maps or food or project equipment.
Essential skills
• Willingness to be flexible and put the needs of the expedition and the venturers first
• Minimum three years driving experience
• To demonstrate an excellent awareness of driving safety ethos, such as route planning, time awareness and road surface judgement, and an understanding of their personal responsibility
• Hold a full driving license
• To be able to demonstrate a good understanding of vehicle maintenance
• To be able to demonstrate a physical capability to change tyres on Land Rover and to undertake basic maintenance work
• Excellent decision making skills and willingness to accept responsibility
• To be well organised and demonstrate excellent driving skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to cope with brief but intensively pressurising high activity periods
• Openness to additional responsibility or assisting colleagues during low activity periods
• To understand and be willing to assist in the delivery of the personal development objectives of our expeditions
Desirable skills
• 4x4 Land Rover driving experience, preferably in a commercial environment
• Expedition driving experience
• Vehicle maintenance experience in a commercial environment
• Language skills, particularly Spanish
One thing is certain - there is no such thing as a typical day on a Raleigh expedition!
