Thailand: Ko Ra
9th January – 16th January 2010
Koh Ra Island, located in Phang Nga Province in Southern Thailand is one of the last true island gems in South Thailand. As Ko Rah is almost completely covered in primary rainforest wildlife photography opportunities abound here, with possibilities of seeing and photographing a myriad number of exotic species, some rare and endangered, including several species of hornbills (inc. oriental pied & great), broadbills, sunbirds, parrots, kingfishers, storks, pitas, bee-eaters, hawks, eagles (inc. white bellied & crested-serpent), wild pigs, deer, otters, pangolin, primates (inc. crab-eating macaque, dusky langur & slow loris), leopard cats, turtles (inc. green, olive ridley & leatherback), flying squirrels, lizards, tree frogs, orchids and butterflies.
There are over 100 species of birds on this island and the neighbouring island of Ko Phra Thong making it an ideal destination for bird watchers and photographers.
Lee will be running daily workshops on wildlife photography focusing on techniques that will help you to take better pictures in the often-difficult conditions found in the rainforest. There will also be ample opportunities to photograph wildlife found on the coast such as the graceful White-bellied Sea Eagle. There are no set daily itineraries and you will be free to opt out of workshops freely should you want to explore the island on your own. There are also many other activities apart from photography that you can delve in to including sea kayaking, snorkelling and yoga.
Our base for the week is the Koh Ra Ecolodge – the only development on the island, which has been designed to have as low an impact on the island as possible. The rooms are constructed with natural materials to produce a simple and comfortable space for guests to enjoy the tranquillity of the area. Each room has a private bath with western toilet and shower. Rooms have either a large Queen size bed or two single beds. A large covered patio is shared for each house of two or three rooms.
The on-site restaurant features fresh and healthy Thai classics and fusion cuisine as well as a selection of Western dishes. Meals are eaten together in family style with everyone convening at the main sala after sunset where the chef has prepared a feast of dishes. You can also have the choice of ordering off the menu. Before dinner, enjoy a tropical cocktail or cold beer on the beach at the beach bar.
