Au Pair, January September 2010
Quick Facts: male au pair, 20 years old, good english, cooking, passed the German Abitur (most advanced German school exams).
My name is Christoph Backöfer and I would like to spend the forthcoming year from January to September in England as an au pair. I am 20 years old and have passed the Abitur exams at the Burggymnasium of Friedberg where I live (they are the final secondary-school examinations and similar to the British A-levels). I want to start studying graphic design next year and really would like to spend the remaining time in Britain to expand my cultural horizon and improve my English. Though my English is good after 10 years of education I am looking for opportunities to improve my ability to speak the language fluently and therefore being an au pair is the perfect way to achieve this. During my time at school our English lessons tended more toward America than England, however my girlfriend‘s father is English and so I have been confronted with some English culture lately and would very much like to widen my knowledge of English and England. Since my girlfriend is currently studying psychology at the University of Essex, I would appreciate the opportunity to visit her at weekends and therefore families that live fairly close to Colchester (up to 3h by public transport) would be ideal.
Due to my father‘s second marriage I have a large family with four siblings, three brothers and one sister. Living in a big family I know how important it is for children to have someone to care for them. As a child I loved spending time with friends but I also enjoyed being with my parents or with the friend of my older brother who used to care for us when our parents where not there. My two younger brothers are three and five years younger than I am and since I was old enough I have looked after them. Today they are old enough to look after themselves, but I still prepare the meals when my parents are not at home and I organise our trips in our free time. I enjoy being with teenagers but I like younger children as well. Because my sister is 22 years older than I am, I already have a little nephew and a niece and I spend a lot of time playing with them and caring for them every time my sister visits us. I‘m a confident person and able to bear responsibility whether for older or younger children.
I like cooking and if necessary I will be able to prepare meals as long as the recipe is not too difficult. I care a lot about my health and therefore it is important to have a healthy diet. Though I don‘t consider myself a vegetarian I stopped eating meat one year ago. I used to eat and to like eating meat but stopped mostly for political reasons (mass animal farming, climate change, rising food production costs and so on). However this represents no problem as far as cooking is concerned, I am quite prepared to cook meat dishes and indeed still do so for my family. I am also quite willing to prepare food for myself and carry any extra expenses. I‘m convinced that it is very easy to get along with different eating habits.
The Abitur represents the highest exam you can pass at a German school, due to my schooling I feel confident about being able to help your children with their homework in most subjects. I‘m a patient person and like explaining things, I tutored several children myself during the time I visited school. Furthermore I am able to help you in the household. I have basic skills in ironing, I‘m used to clean up and can help with the laundry. I may not be the perfect help, but I learn fast and will be able to perform most tasks shown to me.
I spend most of my time working as a semi-professional graphic designer. Creative working with graphics as well as photography and creative writing are also my greatest interests. Due to my work and hobbies I have experience in working with computers which might come in handy when dealing with homework or general issues related to your home computer.
I‘m looking forward greatly to spending the forthcoming year with an English family as I am convinced that it will broaden my horizon and enrich my ability to speak English. In December I‘m going stay at Colchester for two weeks which would be a great opportunity to arrange a meeting to assure that you made a good decision.
Yours sincerely,
Christoph
