Aims of the Course:
The Level 7 Certificate and Diploma have been designed to develop candidates' skills, knowledge and understanding as specialist teachers and their ability to carry out diagnostic assessments, write reports and deliver effective teaching to learners with dyslexia and other learning difficulties affecting literacy and Numeracy. The Level 7 Certificate provides a specialist teacher and assessor qualification recognised by Examination Boards, enabling them to write reports for learners needing special arrangements in SATS and external examinations. Tutors in FE and HE colleges will also be able to write reports in support of students applying for a disability allowance.
Level 7 work is assessed at Masters Level and students who achieve these qualifications may apply for APL when studying towards further M Level qualifications.
Course Content
To achieve the Certificate, candidates must achieve all five units and candidates must achieve all seven

Unit 1: Psychometric and educational assessment methods
Element 1.1: Understand principles of psychometric and educational assessment
Element 1.2: Develop awareness of published assessment resources
Unit 2: Diagnostic assessment of learners
Element 2.1: Plan assessment session
Element 2.2: Conduct diagnostic assessment session
Element 2.3: Interpret test results and other information
Unit 3: Communication and liaison with others
Element 3.1: Write professional, valid, accessible diagnostic assessment reports
Element 3.2: Plan a teaching programme to be delivered by others
Element 3.3: Communicate effectively in an organizational context
Unit 4: Reporting special educational and assessment needs
Element 4.1: Investigate and demonstrate knowledge of relevant regulations and guidance
Element 4.2: Identify methods and materials to screen, select and assess the needs of learners
Element 4.3: Write and process reports
Unit 5: Teaching learners with dyslexia and reflective practice
Element 5.1: Plan lessons and prepare resources
Element 5.2: Deliver lessons and learning support
Element 5.3: Review learners’ progress and evaluate effectiveness of teaching
Unit 6: Key theoretical concepts for teaching learners with dyslexia
Element 6.1: Understand key theoretical concepts relating to Specific Learning Difficulties
Element 6.2: Apply theoretical knowledge to own practice
Unit 7: Assessing and teaching in the context of specific learning difficulties
Element 7.1: Identify and assess learners
Element 7.2: Deliver a programme of teaching
Element 7.3: Evaluate teaching
Entry Requirements
The qualification is designed for qualified and practising teachers. Applications from other professionals who hold appropriate recognised professional qualifications are also welcome. Candidates should possess the Level 5 Certificate in Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (or equivalent qualification) and have an appropriate level of learning support experience together with unrestricted access to appropriate teaching and assessment practice along with literacy and numeracy skills commensurate with a level 7 study. In exceptional circumstances, candidates with extensive training and experience in SpLD, may be considered for a place on Level 7 Certificate even though they do not have either a 307 or Level 5 qualification.
Assessment:
Students will be observed carrying out a formal assessment; this evidence may be required on video. Written work for Units 2 – 7 will be marked by the student’s tutor and both internally verified by the Centre’s Internal Verifier and externally verified by the External Verifier appointed by OCR.
Attendance / Duration:
We have now started recruiting for the 2009 Sept/Oct intakes for the Level 7 Diploma in Assessing & Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties:
* Wednesday 30th September 2009 10:00am - 3:00pm (25 Weeks)
* Thursday 1st October 2009 4:30pm - 7:30pm (30 Weeks)
Progression Opportunities
The Certificate (45 CATS points) and the Diploma (60 CATS points) can lead to a full Master Award using Accreditation for Prior Learning at an institution which delivers this qualification.
Cost:
£2,500.00**
It includes registration with the awarding body, tuition, assessment and certification. Once you have been accepted by the college, the full payment or 50% minimum deposit is required to be paid in order secure a place. The 15% early bird offer is on if booked on or before 30th June 2009 and 10% early bird offer is on if booked on or before 31st July 2009.
Eligibility criteria
In order to be eligible for the funding each teacher applicant must:
Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have completed their induction year;
AND be working in schools in England and have the full endorsement of the Head Teacher of their school, confirming their professional and personal suitability, their commitment to successfully complete the training and their ability to deploy their skills/knowledge post-training;
OR:
be working in England for a Local Authority Support Service, the Voluntary sector or living in England, ifbetween posts, and have the full endorsement of their Line Manager/Senior LA Officer
OR a suitably qualified Head Teacher or Assistant confirming their suitability as set out above.
