This alto saxophone is an excellent budget price student instrument. I am a professional clarinet/sax player and used to use this instrument regularly for teaching. I kept it in good condition and working order. The Elkhart model is an excellent instrument for a beginner. I will not say that it is as good as a yamaha, (arguably the best student model) however, yamaha's are expensive and if you are unsure if you or your child will want to continue, this is an excellent cheaper alternative. It is modelled on the Selmer SA80 and makes a pleasant sound, with good keywork and good tuning.
I have kept this instrument in excellent condition, but now no longer need it as I have a professional instrument.
