Senior Cemeteries Officer
5 month contract – possibly longer term
7am – 4.30pm
Based in south London
Approx £8.50 per hour
• Arrange and attend exhumations
• To undertake research, collate information and prepare reports on any aspect of the Cemeteries service.
• Monitor sickness and absence levels and instigate corrective action and maintain appropriate records, in the Cemetery Managers absence.
• Undertake Cemetery Officer duties at a designated site, and provide cover at any other sites.
• Co-ordinate the availability of grounds maintenance employees with the appropriate District Manager.
• Be responsible for all funeral services taking place within the designated cemetery, with due regard to the sensitive nature of the service and with particular care given to the safety of members of the public.
• Be aware of the varying requirements of different faiths and cultural groups in respect of the funeral service.
• To identify and allocate grave spaces having carefully checked statutory plans and relevant documentation to ensure correct location.
• To subsequently measure and mark out grave plots. Ensure the safety of staff and members of the public during excavation operations.
• As required, to provide advice on soil structure, soil profile, weight etc to District Management employees undertaking the excavating of graves.
• Ensure the daily order of service is properly displayed and that the chapel is clean and tidy prior to any service.
• Following the burial, to ensure the grave is left clean and tidy after backfilling and arrange floral tributes neatly on the grave.
• Identify and check details on approved memorial applications, authorise work schedules and satisfactory completion of Monumental Masons, returning documents to Cemeteries Administration.
• Report defects, damages, breakages and vandalism of buildings, structures and trees to the District Manager for consideration.
• Positively respond to enquiries from members of the public and external organisations in connection with cemetery matters.
• Ensure access to the cemeteries at designated times and that public facilities are in a clean and tidy condition.
• Be familiar with the appropriate cemetery budget, having personal responsibility for the electricity, water, gas, clothing and uniform and cleaning materials budget heads.
• Undertake any other duties that may be required that are commensurate with the level and responsibilities of the post.
• Carry out all duties with due regard to health and safety requirements and regulations.
• To use computerised systems ensuring that the preparation and input of data is in accordance with agreed procedures.
• Knowledge of Burial Law Clean driving license, with access to own vehicle.
