Help with my paid job ad
Posting my job ad
Posting job ads is the same as posting a free ad on Gumtree, however at the end of the posting process, you are asked to choose between payment methods. We accept the following forms of payment:
- Switch
- Maestro
- Visa
- Visa Electron
- Delta
- AMEX
- Master Card
- PayPal
A credit card payment is the most common payment method and after entering your details the transaction is made securely by a third party secure site**.
Once submitted, there will be a delay of about 3-4 hours before the ad will appear online, so please be patient. It may be quicker during week days, but may take longer during the weekend or in the evenings.
After submitting your posting online, you will be sent a confirmation email which will contain your reference number and password. Please keep this email, because you can use these details later to edit, repost or delete your ad.
We also offer an account system for frequent users (more than 10 ads per month). Please see here for details.
For tips in helping your ad stand out and help you get a good response please see here
**A note about security:
Our online credit card payment forms are powered by the SecureTrading payment system which means that your credit card details are fully encrypted using the most sophisticated e-payment software. Our systems relay your credit card information (using the same encryption method) to SecureTrading, which charges your account. We do not keep any of your credit card or PayPal information on our servers.

How can I get a VAT receipt for my paid job ad?
A VAT receipt is sent out automatically by email to the address given in the private contact details for your ad. If you have not received a receipt then please let us know as soon as you can after posting and we will send you one.

Are there any jobs which Gumtree do NOT accept?
Certain jobs cannot be posted on Gumtree – please see job posting rules. This page also gives our refund policies concerning ads which breach these posting rules.

I can’t find my job ad online. Where is it?
There are a few possibilities for why you can’t see your ad:
• Your ad has not yet come on line
There will always be a short delay (it can take up to 3-4 hours) before an ad that is posted or reposted appears online so if you only recently posted/ reposted your ad then it should be appearing shortly.
• Your ad is there but amongst all the other ads it can be hard to find!
Use the search box at the top of the page and enter some text that you included in your ad (the email address, phone number or something else in the description or title) - this should help you locate it.
• Your ad is there but in a different category!
It might be worth using the search box on the Gumtree homepage to try and locate your ad in case you accidentally put it in another category.
• Your ad has expired
If you posted your ad more than 60 days ago then it may have expired.
• Your ad has been deleted
Ads that fall outside our jobs posting rules/terms and conditions may be removed from the site.
If you have checked out all of these possibilities and none of them apply to your ad then please let us know and we will take a look.

Tips for posting a job ad
* Give as much information about the role as possible
Unlike other mediums (magazines, newspapers), you can use as much text as you like in your Gumtree ads – there is no limit. We encourage you to be as descriptive as you need to be, so job seekers can see the exact details of the position that you are advertising for. This will also make it easier for applicants to apply for the role, as many of their questions may already have been answered in the ad.
* Give detailed requirements to ensure quality applicants
To make it easier for quality applicants to apply for your roles give specific requirements such as qualifications. The following inclusions may also save you time dealing with unnecessary applications:
• Please do not apply for posts unless you fill ALL requirements advertised (state all qualifications required).
• If certain language requirements are essential, please state this.
• If the role requires an applicant with specific visa requirements, such as a valid EU work visa, please state this.
Also, be specific in the information you will need from the applicant, e.g. CV, photo, references.
* Be graphic
You can include a picture or a logo with your ad. We have found that this makes your ad more appealing, and sets it aside from other ads. If you have a website with more information, feel free to include this in the ad to give potential applicants an ability to learn more about your company.
* Be friendly
Give your ads some personality! Gumtree is a community, and as such our users like to feel that they are more than just a number. So when you construct an ad, give it some “human” features so it does not just seem like an automatically generated posting, but an appeal for someone to join their company.
* Ensure that all postings are advertising specific roles
Gumtree is a resource for job seekers who want to apply for “Real jobs”. General or generic ads are not allowed on Gumtree because our users want to see genuine roles advertised, not just an advertisement of a certain agency’s services. Your ad will have a greater impact and success if it is specific and contains all relevant information. To avoid delay or disappointment, please make sure your ads are specific. If unsure, please refer to our posting rules and terms and conditions.
The above tips are suggestions designed to help both our employers and job seekers have a successful experience on Gumtree.com. Used correctly, they should streamline your recruitment experience by only attracting relevant applications for your ads.
These suggestions have been collated due to many feedback emails from our users, and should assist you in attracting the perfect candidate (or at least come close!), however feel free to disregard any of the above if you have success with other techniques that have helped you find the right person on Gumtree.com

How do I change the category for my job ad?
If your ad has been posted in the wrong category, let us know as soon as you can after posting, telling us the category you want your ad to be moved to. We will get back to you as soon as we can.

Adding images/ photos to my job ad
To help with your ad you can add a maximum of 3 images. There is no need to worry about sizing your images as that will be done automatically for you when you upload them to your ad. To add images/ photos:
1. At the bottom of the posting description page, there is a button labeled “Add/edit images” – click on that button
2. To add a photo, press the “browse” button to search your computer for the relevant image file
3. Once an image is chosen (and the location of the image appears in the white box), click the “UPLOAD” button. This is very important!
4. Once the upload is complete (this may take a short time), you should be able to view this image on this page.
5. You can repeat the process to add more images (remembering to click “upload” each time), or click “preview your ad” to continue
PLEASE NOTE: Once an ad is submitted with an image, you may not be able to view the image in your ad immediately, as it takes longer for the images to appear than the text. This is normal behaviour so please be patient and check your ad again after an hour or so – your image should then appear.

Reposting my job ad
There are so many ads on Gumtree and the most recent ones appear first, so your ad may quickly move down the listings and you may find you get fewer responses after the first few days.
To repost your ad to the top of the listings, please go to the ‘Edit/delete an ad’ button on the homepage. You will need the posting reference number and password for your ad:
* If you've forgotten your posting reference number simply use the search box in the category you posted in to find your ad. You will find the posting reference number in the bottom right-hand corner of your ad.
* If you've lost or forgotten your password you can click the 'Email me the password’ button, and we will send it to you automatically.
Once your ad comes up go to the bottom of the page, select ‘Preview your ad’ and follow the links through. You can pay £25 straight away online to bring your ad to the top of the listings.

Receiving responses to my job ad
When posting your ad you have three options for receiving responses to your ad:
1. Receive responses by email (and phone), email address is hidden in the ad
People will contact you via an online email form which is forwarded by our system to your email. As your email address is not shown and the emails go through our system first we can also help reduce as much as possible any spam you receive.
To do this and hide your email address in your ad then simply ensure that the “Hide my contact email address” box IS ticked when submitting your ad.
2. Receive responses by email (and phone), email address is visible in the ad
Your email address is visible and so people can email you directly. To do this simply ensure that the “Hide my contact email address” box IS NOT ticked when submitting your ad.
3. Receive responses by phone only, only phone number visible in the ad
If you do not want to receive responses via email at all but just receive responses by phone then simply provide a contact number in the “Phone Number” field and leave the “Email address” field blank.
