Posting my ad

Posting an ad on Gumtree is quick and easy. Simply visit the Gumtree home page and click on the "post an ad" button on the left-hand side of the page. Then:

1. Choose the most relevant category for your ad – see Posting Rules

2. Fill out the details for your ad in the posting form. See our tips for posting an ad

3. Follow the prompts to submit your ad

Once submitted, there can be a delay of up to 3-4 hours before the ad will appear online, so please be patient. Please also be aware that images/ photos can take longer to appear in your ad than the text will.

After you submit your ad, you’ll be sent a confirmation email which will contain your reference number and password. Please keep this email, because you can use these details later to edit, repost or delete your ad.

Where should I post my ad?

To get the best response for your ad you should post it in the most relevant section. Have a look around Gumtree to see all of the possible sections and the kinds of ads posted in them. Also see our Posting Rules page to get a better idea of what should (and shouldn’t!) go in each Gumtree category.

I have posted my ad in the wrong category – can I change the location?

If you have posted in the wrong category, simply use the “edit/delete ad” button on the left-hand side of the Gumtree homepage to delete your ad, and then post a new ad in the correct category. The location of an ad can’t be changed after it has been posted. back to top

Can I put a link in my posting to an ad on another site?

Normally, no. You should find everything you need on Gumtree to create a successful ad. You can:

* use as much space as you like in your ad
* edit your ad at anytime
* include photos

...so there is no need to direct people elsewhere.

If you have something for sale, a job offer or even a place to rent you have the freedom to post it on any site you wish, however we would appreciate it if you could assist us by not including links to these other sites.

I have posted an ad, but I haven’t received a confirmation/ activation email. How long do I have to wait?

After posting an ad, you should receive a confirmation email within 24 hours. If you are using an AOL, Hotmail or another generic email account and you are waiting for an activation email after posting a personal ad, please check your junk mail folder as these emails are sometimes directed there. back to top

The map location on my ad is wrong – why is this?

To include a location map with your ad, you are asked to enter your full postcode (e.g. SW4 9HQ) in the field provided. If the postcode you enter is not complete (e.g. SW4 instead of SW4 9HQ), then it will not display the correct location on the map. To correct this simply edit your ad and enter a full postcode.

Can I post on all Gumtree cities?

Normally, no. Gumtree is a local community site and so to maintain this we ask you to post on the site that is geographically closest to you. Ads will only be accepted that are geographically specific and locally relevant. If someone is looking for accommodation or a job in Manchester, for example, they would visit Manchester Gumtree. This local community approach is what Gumtree is all about. back to top

Why has my ad been deleted?

If you find that your ad is no longer on the site then it is probably due to one of the following:

Your ad has been reported to us
When this happens your ad may be temporarily suspended (this depends on a few things) until we look at it.

We check reported ads as quickly as we can. As long as we find that it hasn’t broken any posting rules or terms and conditions it should be back up again shortly. Check back after a few hours to see if this is the case.

Your ad has been identified as inappropriate by our automated tools
When this happens your ad will be temporarily suspended until we look at it.

We check these suspended ads a quickly as we can. As long as we find that it hasn’t broken any posting rules or terms and conditions it should be back up again shortly. Check back after a few hours to see if this is the case.

Your ad has been removed
Ads either reported to us or identified by our automated tools as inappropriate, that we then find do break our posting rules or terms and conditions will be removed from the site.

In most cases we email you to let you know when we have had to remove your ad. These emails sometimes get directed to junk folders so please look out for emails from postings@gumtree.

Your access has been restricted
Posters that regularly break our posting rules/ terms and conditions may find we also have to restrict their future use of the site. Even if your current ad meets our posting rules/ terms and conditions, if you have previously broken these you may be unable to post on Gumtree again.

This system has all the imperfections of a democratic system. If after a few hours your ad is not back up on and, after reading our Posting Rules and Terms and Conditions, you are confident your posting adheres to our guidelines completely and is in the spirit of Gumtree, please let us know.

How long does my ad stay on the site?

In general, the duration of an ad is as follows:

Accommodation ads – up to 30 days
For sale ads – up to 45 days
Community ads – up to 90 days
Events/Gigs ads – up to the date of the event
Friends/dating ads – up to 45 days
Job ads – up to 60 days

The duration of an ad will be shorter than this maximum if:

• you choose to delete your ad from the site; or
• we exercise our right to remove your ad from the site. In accordance with our terms and conditions, we may remove an ad, without providing you with a refund, if the ad breaches our posting rules and/or our terms and conditions or we believe the ad is inappropriate;
or
• an error in the service results in your ad being deleted. This would be beyond our control and we would not provide you with a refund. As per our terms and conditions, we don’t warrant that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free or that defects in the service will be corrected.

I can’t find my ad. What's happened?

There are a few possibilities for why you can’t see your ad:

• Your ad has not yet come on line
There will always be a short delay (it can take up to 3-4 hours) before an ad that is posted or reposted appears online so if you only recently posted/ reposted your ad then it should be appearing shortly.

• Your ad is there but amongst all the other ads it can be hard to find!
Use the search box on the Gumtree homepage and enter your posting reference number to locate your ad. If you don't know the posting reference number (it is a 7-digit number that would have been sent to you in an email when you posted your ad) then enter in the search box some text that you included in your ad, e.g. the contact email address, phone number or something else you put in the description or title.

• Your ad has expired
If you posted your ad sometime ago (or for an event that has passed) then your ad may have expired. Please see here for details.

• Your ad has been temporarily suspended or removed
See here for details.

If you have checked out all of these possibilities and none of them apply to your ad then please let us know and we will take a look.

When I try to submit my ad, I keep getting told that the price is wrong – why is this?

When you enter the price into the price field of your ad please don't enter either a space, a comma or a “£" sign in the price field along with the numbers. This field only recognises numerical characters (numbers) so if anything else is entered it will interpret it as being incorrect and will therefore not accept it. If you want the price £450 to appear, simply type in: 450
The "£" will then be added automatically.

What is the vehicle registration number needed for?

COMING SOON!

When posting an ad selling a vehicle on Gumtree you will shortly find a field in the form asking for your vehicle registration number. If you enter your registration number and click the 'look up' button some key information about your vehicle will be automatically entered into the ad description to save you some effort!

This field is optional to help make your ad as descriptive as possible to attract potential buyers. If you'd rather skip this then simply leave this field blank.

Your registration number will not be shown on the ad or made visible to users in any way.

Adding images/ photos to my ad

To help with your ad you can add up to 3 images. There is no need to worry about sizing your images as that will be done automatically for you when you upload them to your ad. To add images/ photos:

1. At the bottom of the posting description page, click on the button labeled “Add/edit images”

2. Click on the “browse” button to search your computer for the relevant image file

3. Once an image is chosen (and the location of the image appears in the white box), click the “upload” button. This is very important!

4. Once the upload is complete (this may take a short time), you should be able to view this image on this page.

5. You can repeat the process to add more images (remembering to click “upload” each time)

6. Once done click “preview your ad”

7. If you are happy with your ad then click "submit your ad"

PLEASE NOTE: Once an ad is submitted with an image, you may not be able to view the image in your ad immediately, as it takes longer for the images to appear than the text. This is normal behaviour so please be patient and check your ad again after an hour or so – your image should then appear.

Activating my ad

You need to activate your ad for some categories, like dating. When you have submitted your ad in a category where it needs activation a message will appear on the screen letting you know that an activation email will be sent to you.

Look out for an email from postings@gumtree that will contain an activation link for you to click on, which looks like this:
www.asdfkjashdkljasdhjkl.gumtree

In hotmail you will need to copy and paste the full link into your browser (If this link is longer than one line, you will need to paste both “halves” of the link into the browser). You will get a message confirming that the advert has been activated. Your ad will appear online approx 3-4 hours later.

I am having trouble with the password for my ad

If you are having trouble entering your password then:

• Check when you enter the details that you don’t inadvertently include a space along with the correct characters at the beginning or the end of the password. This can happen if you copy and paste the details from an email, rather than typing the details in individually.

• Also, please be aware that passwords are all case sensitive so ensure the case of the letter matches the originally entered password.

Forgotten your password? Simply click on the “edit/delete ad” button on the left side of the Gumtree home page, enter the reference number of your ad, and click the “Email me the password” button. Your password will then be emailed to you within a few hours.

Reposting my ad

There are so many ads on Gumtree and the most recent ones appear first, so your ad may quickly move down the listings and you may find you get fewer responses after the first few days. To repost your ad so that it appears at the top of that day’s listings you have a few options:

• Use the “edit/delete an ad” button on the Gumtree homepage (excluding Business Services ads)

Click the “edit/delete an ad” button on the left-hand side of the home page and follow the prompts. You will need the posting reference number and password for your ad:
* If you've lost or forgotten your password you can click the 'Email me the password’ button, and we will send it to you.
* If you have forgotten your posting reference number simply use the search fields on site to locate your ad. You will find the posting reference number in the bottom right-hand corner of your ad.

After a short delay reposted ads will appear in the current day’s listings. Your ad will then continue to move down the listings as other users post new ads or bump up their existing ads.

• Gumtree’s “Bump Up” service (excluding paid job ads and rental ads)

Gumtree's new "Bump Up" Service enables you to bump your free ad (this is not available for paid job or rental ads) back to the top of the listings without logging on to Gumtree.

You can bump up your ad using either of the following two methods:

1) You can call the following premium rate telephone number: 0907 787 2727. Calls to this number cost £1.50 per minute. [Calls from mobiles and some networks may be higher.] You will hear a series of recorded messages and you will be asked to key in your 8 digit ad reference number.

2) You can text "GUMTREE" plus your 8 digit ad reference number to the following premium rate short code number: 82070. Texts to this number cost £1.50 per text [plus your usual text tariff].

Please note that the telephone number and text number will only work from within the UK.

See our "Bump Up" service rules for full terms and conditions.

After a short delay reposted ads will appear in the current day’s listings. Your ad will then continue to move down the listings as other users post new ads or bump up their existing ads.

Receiving responses to my ad

When posting your ad you have three options for receiving responses:

1. By email (and phone), email address is hidden in the ad
People will contact you via an online email form which is forwarded by our system to the email address you supply. As your email address is not shown and the emails go through our system first we can also help reduce as much as possible any spam you receive.
To do this and hide your email address in your ad simply ensure that the “Hide my contact email address” box IS ticked when submitting your ad.

2. By email (and phone), email address is visible in the ad
To have your email address visible in your ad simply ensure that the “Hide my contact email address” box IS NOT ticked when submitting your ad.

3. By phone only, only your phone number is visible in the ad
If you don’t want to receive responses by email at all but just receive responses by phone then simply provide a contact number in the “Phone Number” field and leave the “Email address” field blank. Please note that we do not allow phone numbers in casual relationship ads to prevent mis-use.

What is the 'Hide my contact email address' option when I post my ad?

When this box is ticked your contact email address will not be visible on your ad. Instead there will be a 'reply to' link on your ad that directs people to a simple online email form where they can fill in their response and their contact details. This response is then forwarded automatically by our system to the email address you supply.

As your email address is not shown on the site and the responses to your ad go through our system first we can also help reduce as much as possible any spam you receive.

In some categories where we think it is particularly important to protect you from spam we have made hiding your email address mandatory and so this box is already ticked and greyed out. back to top

I am not getting much response for my ad. What’s wrong?

Reasons for this might be:

* Your ad could be in the wrong category. In which case you will need to delete your ad and post a new ad in the correct category.

* It could have moved down the listings pages, in which case it's worth reposting your ad so that it appears under today's date.

* You may have entered your contact details incorrectly, in which case you can edit your ad and repost.

* If you don’t think that any of the above is the problem then it might be worth making some changes to your ad to help it stand out more. Take a look at tips for posting an ad

I have received spam in connection to my ad on Gumtree. What should I do?

Please report it to us so that we can take appropriate action to stop them from spamming Gumtree users again.

If you haven't already, you might also want to hide your email address in your ad so that responses are sent through our system and then forwarded on to you. This will offer you more protection from spam.

Tips for posting an ad

* Be descriptive: Unlike other mediums (magazines, newspapers), you can use as much text as you like in your Gumtree ads – there is no limit. We encourage you to be as descriptive as you need to be. Think of all the typical questions someone might ask and put them in your ad.

* Be graphic: You can include up to three images with your ad. We have found that this makes your ad more appealing, and sets it aside from other ads. See Adding images/ photos to my ad.

* Be friendly: Give your ads some personality! Gumtree is a community, and as such our users like to feel that they are more than just a number. So when you construct an ad, give it some “human” features so it does not just seem like an automatically generated posting.
